Y ou know taste makes waist. But did you know that more taste may also cause heartburn? Actually heartburn, a burning sensation behind the breastbone, has nothing to do with the heart. moves up into the esophagus, ir- ritating its lining. “Heartburn ‘can be caused when people eat too much foods that contain fat, chocolate or peppermint,” Dr. Donald Castell, professor of ‘medicine (gastroenterology) at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, said. “Drinking too much alcohol also can cause heartburn.” Once the "lining of the esophagus becomes irritated, other foods and drinks can ag- grevate the irritation. These in- clude citrus “juices, coffee and ‘foods having tomatoe in them. Castell has two suggestions on how to avoid heartburn. “We all should try not to eat and drink too heavily during the holidays,” he said. “We should also avoid lying down within the first hour or two after eating. When a per- son lies down on a full stomach, ‘it is much easier for the stomach acid to move into the esophogus.” There are a variety of antacid medications available without a prescription that help to relieve the symptoms, If they don’t work, Castell suggests seeing a physician for a more effective medication or to make sure that nothing more serious is causing: them to feel bad. cn SA iv — up It occurs when stomach acid vases Ix IC FILL RK i 2hiaid? angi NM - CLOTHESLINE Hwy. 74 - West - Kings Mountain 739-7491 LADIES LEE BAGGIES 19° =.= LADIES LEE STRETCH (14-22 Large Size) 520° BASIC LADIES LEE 519° MENS BASIC LEE , $19, ff < \ aN : ; 3 : A .
