Local Students Join Kappa Delta Pi
CULLOWHEE--Three
Western Carolina University
students from Gaston County
are among 54 newly elected
members of the Mu Eta chapter
of Kappa Delta Pi honor society
in education at WCU.
The new members-Theresa
Bumgardner of Kings Mountain,
Gayla Green of Dallas and
David Tresch, a 1977 graduate
of Cherryville Senior High
School--were among those
honored recently at initiation
ceremonies in Asheville and in
Cullowhee.

Selected
BOILING SPRINGS, NC—
Robert L. Decker, Ed.D.,
associate professor of music at
Gardner-Webb College, has been
selected to read a paper %: the
mid-atlantic chapter meetin; of
the College Music Society in
Richmond, Va., March 29-30,
1985.
Dr. Decker was selected by
the program committee of the
society to give a paper based
upon research done for a doc-
toral dissertation. The disserta-
tion was entitled “A Survey to
Determine the Use of Music
Theory Knowledge and Skills by
North Carolina Public School
Music Teachers.”
“This is a noteworthy ac-
complishment. We haven’t had
anyone in the music department
selected to read before,” said Dr.
George. Cribb, chairman of the
department of fine arts. .
The paper will be published in
the College Music Society’s Jour-
nal, “College Music
Symposium”.
Gardner Webb is a liberal arts
college affiliated with the Baptist
State Convention of N.C., offer-
ing associate, bachelor and
master’s degrees. The college is
noted for its independence of
federal funding.

SOUR CREAM POUND CAKE
3 c. sugar
2 sticks butter
6 eggs, separated hd
3 cups sifted flour
V4 teaspoon soda
1 c. sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla, optional
1 teaspoon almond flavoring, op-
tional
Cream butter and sugar. Add
egg yolks one at a time, beating
well after each. Sift flour, soda,
add alternately with sour cream.
Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
Bake in greased and floured pan
one hour and 30 minutes at 300
degrees F. Remove from pan at
once.

HAWAIIAN POUND CAKE
3 cups sugar
1 cup shortening
6 eggs
4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
Y4 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon lemon extract
1 small can crushed pineapple,
drained slightly
1 can coconut
Cream sugar and shortening
until fluffy. Add eggs one at a
time, beating well after each ad-
dition. Combine flour, baking
powder and salt. Add to creamed
mixture alternately with milk.
Stir in remaining ingredients.
Bake in large greased and floured
tube pan at 350 degrees for 12
hours. Cool slightly. Remove
from pan and spread with glaze.
GLAZE
5 cup softened butter
1 cup powdered sugar
piece of lemon
Mix well and spread on cake.

TASTY ORANGE BALLS

1 (12 oz.) pkg. vanilla wafers
1 Ib. box powdered sugar
1 stick margarine, softened
1 (6 oz.) can frozen orange juice,
thawed and undiluted
1 cup finely chopped nuts
flaked coconut
Crush wafers fine, add next
four ingredients and mix well
with hands. Form into balls and
roll in coconut. Chill until firm.
Makes three or four dozen.

Miss Bumgardner, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Bud Bumgardner
of Route 3, Kings Mountain,
and a 1981 graduate of Kings
Mountain High School, is a
senior majoring in special educa-
tion at Western.She is a member
of the Student Council for Ex-
ceptional Children, Alpha Lamb-
da Delta honor society for
freshmen and the advisory com-
mittee to the dean of the School
of Education and Psychology.
She is on the dean’s list and has
received scholarships to WCU.
Miss Green, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Woodrow Green of
1504 Bessemer City Road,
Dallas High School and a 1973
graduate of Mars Hill College.
She received a master’s degree in
middle grade education from
WCU in 1977 and is an elemen-
tary school physical education
teacher in the Gaston County
schools.
Tresch is assistant athletic
trainer at WCU and is pursuing
a master’s degree in physical
education.
Tresch has been elected as an
athletic trainer to every major
North Carolina all-star game and
has served as a trainer at the
AAU Junior Nationals, the
Special Olympics and the NCAA
national championships in
_ basketball, soccer and football.
