Face Warriors Tonight Kings Mountain High’s wrestlers remained a game behind unbeaten East Gaston in Southwestern 3-A Conference action Monday night at home with a 34-21 victory over Shelby’s Lions. Coach Steve Moffitt takes his Mountaineers to East Gaston Thursday for their biggest bout of the year. A Kings Mountain victory would throw the con- ference race into a three-way tie between East Gaston, Kings Mountain and Burns. The Mountaineers, 4-1 in the SWC and 6-2 overall, took ad- vantage of three forfeits to win Monday night’s match. The Mountaineers clinched. the vic- tory when Paul Terry picked up da ‘forfeit victory in the 155-pound class. Kings Mountain heavyweight _ Calvin Stephens turned in the quickest pin of the night when he defeated Shelby’s Lamount Carpenter in 29 seconds. Kings Mountain’s 138-pounder, ‘Vince Sullens, remained undefeated with a major decision over Shelby’s Bob Uthe. The Mountaineers host South Point next Monday night and travel to West Lincoln Tuesday afternoon for a makeup match. That bout was originally scheduled for last Thursday but was postponed due to bad weather in Lincoln County. Defense Keys KM’s Sweep Of Shelby Clubs Defense was the name of the game Friday as Kings Mountain High’s basketball teams swept a Southwestern 3-A Conference doubleheader at Shelby. The Kings Mountain girls held Shelby to just one point in the second period and two in the third to score a 35-34 victory and the Mountaineers held the Golden Lions to 12 points in the second half to score a come- from-behind 5346 victory. The victory kept the KM boys undefeated and tied for first place in the SWC with RS Cen- tral. Kings Mountain’s girls im- proved their record to 3-5 in the SWC and 4-8 overall. Doreen Pettus returned after an absence of three games and scored 14 points to lead the KM girls to victory. Regina‘ Brown added 10. Hannah Oglesby led Shelby with 14. Shelby jumped out front early and held a 16-8 lead after the first eight minutes. The Moun- tainettes outscored the Lady Lions 5-1 in the second period to cut the margin to 17-12 at halftime. An 8-2 advantage for Kings Mountain in the third period made it 21-19, KM, going into the fourth period. Shelby’s boys grabbed a 34-29 halftime lead over the Moun- taineers but the Lions couldn’t score over Kings Mountain’s tough man-to-man defense in the second half. The Mountaineers outscored the Lions 14-8 in the third period to take a 4342 lead. KMHS outscored the Lions 104 in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Jerry Jordan con- nected on three free throws, one of which was a technical, with 15 seconds left to clinch the vic- tory for Coach Larry Sipe’s Mountaineers. Shelby did a good job defen- sively on Kings Mountain’s leading scorer, Lavar Curry; but Darryl Crocker had one of his best games of the year to lead the KM victory. He hit 10 of 17 shots from the floor and led all scorers with 24 points. He also led the KM rebounding effort with 13. Curry added 13 points and eight rebounds and Aubrey Hollifield contributed nine re- bounds. The Mountaineers hit 21 of 48 from the floor for 43.7 per- cent and 11 of 25 from the foul line. Shelby hit only 38 percent from the floor and 43 percent from the line. Greg Heaton led the Lions with 14 points and Kenny Wray added 10.
