Funeral services were con- ducted Sunday at 3 p.m. at Bullock Creek Presbyterian Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Bullock Creek Presbyterian Church. Harold Fite and Rev. Wilson Padgett, in- terment following in the church cemetery. Mr. Shephard was a native of Rutherford County and had retired from J.P. Stevens Co. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church. He was son of the late Samuel and Loret- ta Bailey Shephard. Rhyne Miles Hoffman Rhyne of ' Raleigh, a leader in the North Carolina banking community for 40 years, a former state senator and former member of the state Utilities Commis- - sion, died Wednesday. ‘Rhyne of 1002 Blenheim Road was 78. He served in the state Senate, representing Gaston County in the 1961 session, and helped to write the state’s first small loan legislation. He served on the utilities commission from 1970 to 1972. From 1967 to 1969, Rhyne was senior vice president and Raleigh city executive of Branch Banking and Trust Co. From 1972 to 1980, he was associated with First Citizens National Bank. Rhyne began his banking career as a bookkeeper and teller for First National Bank of Gastonia from 1928 to 1934. From 1934 to 1960, he worked for the National Bank of Com- merce in Gastonia, rising. from assistant cashier to bank president. =~ From 1960 to 1962, he was executive vice president of First Union National Bank in Charlotte. : From 1962 to 1965, he was president and chief executive officer of Lincoln Bank of Van Nuys, Calif., and from 1965 to 1967 was president of Greenfield State Bank, Bakersfield, Calif. Rhyne was the founder and . first president of the Gaston County YWCA and past presi- dent of the Gastonia Chamber of Commerce and the Gaston County Merchants Association. Funeral was at 4 p.m. Thursday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on St. Mary's Street with committal ser- vices at 1 p.m. Friday at Lutheran Chapel Church in Gastonia. Surviving are his wife. Mrs. Rubye D.
