RALEIGH -- Senator Helen
Rhyne Marvin (D-Gaston)
has been appointed by Presi-
dent pro-tem of the Senate
J.J. Harrington to a two year
term with the National Con-
ference on State Legislatures
Committee on Arts, Tourism,
and Cultural Resources. Mar-
vin has served two prior
terms on this board.
The National Conference of
State Legislatures is one of
the most prestigious policy
influencing bodies in the na-
tion, representing the views
of legislatures from all over
the United States in presenta-
tions before Congress.
With the Committee on
Arts, Tourism and Cultural
Resources, Marvin will study
the economic impact of the
arts, historic preservation,
cultural activities, and
tourism. She will also work in
design issues in urban
revitalization through the
arts and historic preserva-
tion.
The Committee will be
engaged in proposing model
legislation for state arts pro-
motion and will analyze
issues in arts legislation.

The primary thrust of the
North Carolina Academy of
Family Physicians, a consti-
tuent chapter of
American Academy of Fami-
ly Physicians, is continuing
medical education. In addi-
tion to the 150 hours required
for re-election to the NCAFP ,
members must accumulate
300 hours. of continuing
the
medical education for Board
certification. Family
medicine is the only medical
specialty to require Board re-
certification every 7 years.
Family medicine became a
medical specialty February
8, 1969 with the inception of
its residency training pro-
gram. During the initial
period of the specialty, (then)
general practitioners were
allowed to take a certification
examination and become

however, all must complete a
three-year family practice
medicine residency training
program to be eligible for
certification by the American
Board of Family Practice.
Family medicine is the na-
tion’s largest medical
specialty, comprising over
