i e / Several players from Tulane University allegedly shaved points for money during this season. This brings to mind so many thoughts and feelings that I’ve had over the years of be- Ing a college sports player and fan. There were of scandals of ’51, the cancellation of the popular Dixie Classic, In suspension of Connie Hawkins and the i Kennedy to get him permission to play NBA basketball, and there was—in more recent times—the incredible ten year ~ prison sentence handed down to a Boston College player ‘‘an an example to others.” course the involvement of Ted In my opinion, the whole issue is fraught with hypocrisy. I do not in any way condone ponpsfiaying, But I do not in any way condone the policies of the NCAA which do not permit an athlete to receive even a minimal amount of spending money or other benefits which generators of so much income so ob- viously deserve. If the NCAA rules made any sense at all, a few hundred dollars wouldn’t look so big to the kids tempted to ruin their future. How can the governing body of American collegiate sports be surprised at things like point-shaving scandals when they, by rule, create blatant injustices like coaches getting $250,000 a year but players getting nothing? Pure and simple, the stupid NCAA rules encourage honest perspective on what truly is honest and what is not. How bad is winning by 7, not 10, in comparion with the rest of what goes on? I have to wonder how point-shaving can be so bad among players when it is so-called ‘‘standard etiquette’ among coaches—don’t embarrass anyone by beating a team too bad- ly. Have you ever heard the clamor over a team staying in a full court press with a twenty point lead? My father, a very successful high school coach, got more criticism down through the years for winning by too much than for losing. Coaches’ ‘‘etiquette’’ never made sense to me. Where I come from, we thought, the kids who practice all summer in the sun should be permitted to demonstrate their off-season efforts by killing teams who used their summers for lounging around, drinking Kool-Aide, playing badminton, and enjoying recreational swimming. Can anyone explain why a group of dedicated kids hursday, April 18, 1985-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Page 11A I Don’t Condone Point Shaving, But Don’t Condone NCAA Policies Either recruiters—care about things like point averages. And you know there are many times when an individual must sacrifice his personal stats for the good of the team. But why should a kid sacrifice his personal stats for the good of etiquette? “That's different,” you might say? But it’s different too if the kid willing to win by seven, instead of ten, has a real need for money and has nowhere to get it. “Wait till you get in the pros. Be patient,” people say smug- ly, forgetting that 95 per cent of the kids don’t ever get in the pros, forgetting that eighteen year olds can hardly be ex- pected to be more intelligent than the adults who make stupid rules to encourage cheating in the first place. In the insane climate of NCAA rules, an aberration just doesn’t seem that bad some times. If they put some Tulane players in prison, it would be nice if they could at least throw in a few NCAA officials with them. Query outlasted a fine field of cars to take his first Late Model feature after moving up from several years of driv- ing in the Semi-Modified divi- sion at Concord. Query and the Flintstone Flyer, Mike Duvall won their heat races that determined the start of the 40-lap feature and so the battle was all set when the green fell on the top event of the 12-event pro- ram. Duvall went to the ront but Query held on and gave the bearded driver from Gaffney, S.C, all the competi- tion that he could handle. Larry Moore and Doug Os- teen were also in the thick of things. On lap 14, Duvall went in the pits after his oil pressure gauge showed he ad lost all pressure. Duvall made the discovery during a caution and later discovered that the dry sump system had failed and he would have cooked an engine had he con- tinued to race. Charlie Swartz could never get his rear-engined racer to handle right, and hit the guard rail in the fourth turn and dashed his hopes of a vic- tory. Loy Allen, Jr. also had the Concord jinks on his back and had problems all night long. Lary Moore finished se- cond behind Query. Then came Doug Osteen, Steve Daniel, Paul Croft, Tom Erikson, Mark Robertson, Phil Nye, John Eury and Larry Williams. Johnny Purser and Kenny Teague battled long and hard and finished first and second respectfully in the Semi- Modified feature. Jeff Miller won the Hobby feature and Ray Haggard took the Super Stock win. Concord Motor Speedway will feature the se- cond of their Big Ten races this Friday and Saturday nights (April 19-20). Winner of the Sun-Drop 100 will take home $10,000 in prize money. Top stars from all over the USA will be on hand to try to capture the big prize in this -100 lap feature. As always, when all the top guns in the Late Model divi- sion are on hand, all the top drivers in the other three divisions will be at Concord. Friday nights activity will in- clude qualifying for the Late Model Sportsman cars as well as a Fast Car Dash among the top 10 qualifiers. The Semi-Modifieds will run qualifying heats and the Hob- by and the Super Stocks will run qualifying races. Con- cord Motor Speedway is located on Highway 601 south of Concord. Scott Wins At Gaffney GAFFNEY, SC-Union’s Billy Scott became the first late model sportsman repeat , winner Saturday at the Cherokee Speedway. ‘Johnny Hightower, Ricky Weeks} Jeff Smith and Den- nis Williams were others in the top five. Hot Rod LeMance, Danny Horton and David Moyer were 1-2-3 in the limited sportsman main event. Roger Owensby claimed the street class feature race. Racing resumes Saturday at7 p.m. Gates open at5 p.m.
