Society Holds Convention Eta State, Delta Kappa Gamma International Socie- ty, held the annual conven- tion at the Pinehurst Hotel, Pinehurst, April 26-28. Outstanding women educators from throughout the state convened for workshops, leadership development, and presenta- tions made by committee chairmen. Eta State President, Ms. Mary. Ann Nichols presided over the convention pro- ceedings and presented the international representative, Dr. Beatrice O’Brien of Los Angeles as the banquet speaker. O’Brien serves as a member-at-large on the ad- ministrative board and received the Society's Achievement Award in 1980. She has been a principal and administrative assistant in the Los Angeles City Unified School District. Kay Wilson, President, of Lincolnton attended the Eta State Convention represen- ting Beta Epsilon Chapter. She had this to say about the convention activities: ‘‘The meetings were inspirational and informative. I enjoyed being with key women educators from throughout the state of North Carolina.” Delta Kappa Gamma Meets In Cherryville The members of Beta Ep- silon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma met at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cher- ryville on May 2 for a dinner meeting. Hostesses were the Cherryville members. The invocation was given by Julia Renfro, after which a delicious meal was enjoyed. Ann Newton brought greetings. : A Senior High student from Cherryville, Blair Beam, sang ‘‘You Have To Be Carefully Taught’’ and ‘““Younger Than Springtime”, accompanied by Martha Hoyle. Ruth Angel gave an educa- tional program on ‘‘Special Services for Exceptional Children.” The president, Mrs. Kay Wilson conducted a brief business meeting after the program. Kings Mountain had 10 members present at the meeting. AUCTION - Joyce Dixon of Kings Mountain auctions off items during Monday's auc ion sponsored by the local Beta Chi Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa at St. Matthews Lutheran Church. The group used the auction to raise money for its scholarship fund and other projects. Beta Chi Chapter Holds Auction To Raise Funds The local Beta Chi Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa held an auction Monday night at St. Matthews Lutheran Church and raised $623 to finance scholarship and altruistic projects. Beta Chi is made up of teachers representing all local schools and meets each month during the school year. Its programs are plann- ed to keep the members in- formed of worthy community events relating to education and charity. The Kings Mountain chapter has 24 active members. For a number of years the chapter has given a scholarship to a deserving high school senior who is planning to go into the field of education. This scholarship is named in memory of Helen BOOK CHARACTERS - Students from Mrs. Bailey’s fourth grade at West School dressed as characters last week. Left to right are Candi Hovis, Shannon Davis, Marcus Hanks and Jay Jenkins. Logan, who was an English teacher and Guidance Counselor at Kings Mountain High School. For its altruistic projects, Beta Chi members contribute money and gifts to Boys Home and Girls Home, ar- range bulletin boards at the convalescent center and send magazine subscriptions to Kings Mountain Hospital. Alpha Delta Kappa is an in- ternational honorary sorority for women educators. The sorority, which was chartered in Jefferson City, Missouri, now has its head- quarters in Kansas City, Missouri. The sorority pro- motes high standards of education and recognizes the outstanding women educators who are actively engaged in teaching, ad- Garnell book ministration or some specialized field of the teaching profession. There are 90 active chapters in North Carolina with memberships totaling over 2,600. Not only does North Carolina chapters give scholarships to its members for further study, but it also promotes charitable projects and activities. Contributions have been made to the North Carolina Symphony, Lake Waccamaw Boys Home, and Girls Haven. In addition to these state projects, each chapter selects its own altruistic projects and gives scholarships to deserving students. ; Girl Struck By Car A 6-year-old Grover girl was injured Saturday when she was struck by a car abeut 7 p.m. on Highway 29. Candy Marie Bridges, of Route 7, Grover, is recover- } ing from injuries in Cleveland Memorial Hospital where she is listed in guarded condition. Driving the car was Texie Limbaugh Flicks, 69, of 105 } Dover Drive, Shelby. Trooper J.L. Evans in- vestigated and made no charges.
