KM Golfers
Win Awards
Kings Mountain women
golfers brought home a
number of awards in an
18-hole tournament hosted by
Kings Mountain Country
Ladies Golf Association at
Kings Mountain Country Club
in which 62 Foothills Golfers
participated.
Luncheon was served and
prizes were awarded.
Horse
Show
Slated
The Kings Mountain Saddle
Club will sponsor its second
horse show of the season
Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
and continuing throughout
the afternoon and evening.
There will be an intermission
between the afternoon and
evening shows. The evening
show starts at 7 p.m.
Forty-five classes of show
horses will be judged with
competition for English,
Western and Game horses.
Judges will be Neil Scruggs
of Lenoir (English) and Steve
Pickett of Trent, S.C.
(Western).
High point trophies will be
awarded:in each of the three
divisions.
Admission is $2 for adults.
Children under 12 may attend
free of charge. Concessions
will be sold.
The Saddle Club is located
off Waco Road, north of
Kings Mountain. For more in-

Smith Wins
At Gaffney
Gaffney, SC-Freddie Smith
won the late model sport-
sman main event Saturday
night at the Cherokee Speed-
way.
Pete Ivey, Wally Fowler
“and Blake Shumaker were
1-2-3 in the limited sportsman
feature. Roger Hamrick was
the street winner.
In addition to the regular
Saturday night programs, the
Cherokee Speedway plans an
exciting Fourth of July pro-
gram.
Scorers for the event were
Beth Baker, Ethel Tignor,
Phyllis Cheshire, Esther
Muench, and Lillian Wright.
Ginnie Arnette, who served
as hostess for the event,
decorated the tables and
clubhouse with flowers from
her garden.
Clara Little fired the
longest putt on No. 5 and
Lynne Mauney of Kings
Mountain fired the longest
drive on No. 3. Other local
women who won prizes were
Lynne Mauney, second low
gross in first flight; Margaret
Williams, second low gross in
second flight; Julie Timms,
third low gross; Doris Clon-
inger, first low net in second
flight; Ann Pouchak, second
low gross in third flight;
Susie Howard, first low net in
third flight; Peggy Jackson,
fourth low net in third flight;
Linda Rome, second low net
in fifth flight.
The next Foothills League
tournament is slated for
Thursday, July 11; in
Statesville. Women golfers
are invited to sign up in the
KMCC pro shop by July 3.

dropped two of three Area

Post 155 fell to league-
leading Caldwell County 9-1
Wednesday night at Lan-
caster Field, edged Burke
County 9-6 in 12 innings Fri-
day in Morganton and fell to
Forest City 6-3 Saturday at
Lancaster Field.
The Juniors were schedul-
ed to go to Hickory last night.
They host Cherryville Fri-
day, go to Shelby Saturday
and travel to Lenoir next
Wednesday.
Post 155 struck for three
runs in the top of'the 12th inn-
ing Friday to edge Burke
County. Greg Goble reached
base on a third strike-wild
pitch to get the rally started.
After Ritchie Gold walked
and both runners advanced a
base on a wild pitch, Bobby
Pearson reached base on an
error which allowed Goble to
score the winning run. Kelly
Stewart insured the win with
a two-run single.
Paul Neisler, the third KM
pitcher, picked up the win. He
came on in the ninth inning.
Jerry McDaniel started for
Post 155 and was relieved in
the second by Alan Up-
church.
Kings Mountain grabbed a
1-0 lead in the top of the first
when Thomas Breakfield
singled and later scored on a
double by Goble. But Burke
County took advantage of two
walks and three hits to score
four runs in the home half of
the first and take a 4-1 lead.
Post 155 cut the margin to
4-2 in the fourth when Up-
church walked, moved to se-
cond on a fielder’s choice and
scored on a single by Stewart.
Kings Mountain moved
ahead 54 with three runs in
a 9-6, 12-inning victory over Burke County.

Gold and Doc Boheler drove
home the runs with back-to-
back doubles.
Proctor walked, stole se-
cond, moved to third on a
wild pitch and scored on an
error in the top of the ninth to
make it 6-4 before Burke
scored twice in the bottom of
the ninth to send the game in-
to extra innings.
Breakfield, Proctor, Goble
and Stewart finished with two
hits each to lead the KM plate

hits in Wednesday’s loss to
Lenoir. The KM team got its
only run in the fifth when
Todd Fleming walked and
later scored on a single by
Breakfield. ;
Tommy Batchler started
for Post 155 and was relieved
in the eighth by Neisler.
Breakfield led the KM hitting
with two hits and Proctor,
Goble and Gold had one each.

Forest City scored five
runs with two out in the ninth
inning to edge Post 155 Satur-
day night at Lancaster Field.
Tommy Batchler started
for KM and took the loss.
Jerry McDaniel came on in
the ninth.
Forest City managed only
two hits in the winning ninth,
but took advantage of a wild
pitch on a third strike which
would have ended the game
and a dropped fly ball which
resulted in two runs.
Proctor’s two-run homer in
the first gave Post 155 a 2-0
lead. After Forest City cut it
to 2-1 in the third, KM moved
ahead 3-1 in the fourth as
Gold singled and later scored
Kings Mountain finished
with seven hits. Gold led the
way with two and Breakfield,
Proctor, Goble, Dal Haynes
and Pearson added one
apiece.
