The 1985 celebration was sponsored by the Faith American Legion Auxiliary who take turns with the American Legion and the Civitan Club in hosting the always-popular all-day event which begins with a big parade at 10 a.m., the crowning of Rowan County Veterans Queen, members of the Queens court, and includes cash prizes for best floats, etc. in the 125-plus unit parade. There is always good food and fellowship, topped off with a fireworks extravaganza and the patriotic event draws people from all over the state. Thursday’s parade was, the second I had participated in as a guest of the Auxiliary. The Faith unit invited me when I was state President of the Auxliary in 1976. Twenty years ago Faith was probably the only city or town in the state that held an observance on the Fourth of July. Now, many communities hold Fourth events, including our own here in Kings Mountain, which was well attended at the Community Center and at the Commissioners Park. The fireworks display here also drew one of the largest crowds ever. The years following Vietnam have seen Americans grow prouder of their freedoms, have seen them wanting to show off their pride and love of country. Perhaps more than ever this year more Americans flew the flag and paused in their busy schedules to thank God for their many freedoms they continue to enjoy every day in free America. Freedom in America is still an unfinished business but more than ever before on July 4, 1985 more of us realized that it is up to each generation of citizens, from all sections of this country, to cherish it and protect it. OPINION Welcome Back TG&Y Same Name But New Look The Herald joins other business citizens of the community in welcoming back TG&Y. We're glad that TG&Y is returning to West Gate Plaza and we look forward to joining the shopping public in supporting the business citizen. Marylin Rippy, public relations officer for TG&Y in Oklahoma City, Okla., said that when their company presi- dent speaks before various groups he tells the story of how Kings Mountain citizens got together and decided to do something about the closing of the store here last August. “The community support in Kings Mountain was magnificent and we took another look and based on the evaluation of the market situation decided to reopen TG&Y Family Center in Kings Mountain,” said President and Chief Executive Officer Richard Rusthoven.
