GARDENING ODDITY - Joe Whitehurst of Route 3, Kings Mountain, has been
gardening for years but he saw a first last week when he found cantaloupes and
cucumbers growing on the same vine. Whitehurst said he set out cucumber plants only
and has no cantaloupe plants in his garden. He said he was told by an agricultural
department employee that it’s impossible for cantaloupes and cucumbers to cross.
However, the proof is in the picture, even though the mystery remains.
