Jet Fighter Plane, above, was delivered to the City of Kings Mountain Monday night and
the plane will be ‘‘cleaned up’’ and put on display in front of the Community Center. Ac-
cording to Mayor Pro Tem Irvin (Tootie) Allen, it took two weeks to arrive from Tucson,
Arizona and the plane, discarded by the government, was a gift from the U.S. Govern-
ment to the city. Only cost to the city was for shipment. The fighter plane was retired by

In colonoscopy, a fiber op-
tic instrument is inserted in
the colon and polyps, if any,
are removed. The technique
is becoming more and more
common as persons become
familiar with symptoms of
colon and rectal cancer and
the important diagnostic pro-
cedure can he done and is
done on all age people.
Should you be checked for
colon cancer?
Cancer of the colon and rec-
tum is one of the most
curable forms of cancer, yet
it will kill 60,000 people in the
United States, 1,750 in the
Carolinas this year. Only one
cancer, lung cancer, will be
more deadly.
Prevention and early
detection is the key to cure.
When detected in an early,
localized stage, the five-year
survival rate is 87% for colon
cancer and 78% for rectal
cancer, compared to 47% and
38%, respectively, after the
cancer has spread.
Symptoms of the disease
are blood in the stool or from
the rectum, a change in
bowel habits, abdominal
pain, and weight loss. Anyone
of any age with these symp-
toms should see a physician.
The American Cancer
Society, which hopes
checkups for colon and rectal
cancer will eventually
become as routine as
women’s pap smears and
breast examinations, recom-
mends the following screen-
ing regimen for people who
have no symptoms and no
family history of colon and
rectum cancer:
