Linda Adams Bell, of Mount Holly, formerly of Kings Mountain, has been tracing her roots for the past several years. Because of her interest in family trees and genealogical roots, Linda and her hus- band, Ted, and their children, Elaine Dellinger and Rodney and Jimmy Bell, have visited many cemeteries in Gaston- Cleveland Counties and Lin- da joined the Gaston County Historical Society three years ago, which she serves as secretary, and along with Gaston County residents Robert C. Carpenter and Lib- by Goodnight, helped compile the soon-to-be published ‘The complete 1850 Census of Gaston County, North Carolina.” Linda is the daughter of Harold and Bessie Adams, also formerly of Kings Moun- tain, now of Mount Holly, and granddaughter of the late George Adams and Bessie Adams, now of Lowell. The late Hub Adams of Kings Mountain was her late great- uncle. Linda says the book will provide valuable first hand information for people researching family origins and it is the most accurate record in existence of what Gaston County was like in the days before the Civil War. This was the first federal cen- sus in which all residents are listed by name with specific information about their farms, TRACING ROOTS—Linda Adams Bell, Elaine Dellinger, Ted Bell, front row, left to right, and Rodney Bell, back left, and Jimmy Bell are a former Kings Mountain family who are tracing their roots and Mrs. Bell has contributed toward the research leading to publishing of ‘The Complete 1850 Census of Gaston County’ which is soon to be published. families and businesses. : Linda says that although the information has been on microfilm for several years at both the Gaston County Public Library and Gaston College, the original is hand written in elaborate script that is hard to decipher. The book version is typed and all information on residents is indexed which makes it easy to ready and easy to find information about certain families. Carpenter is also the author of the 1,120 page ‘““Carpenters A Plenty’, ARTA Las Ee Sg RR Re EEE PLAYOFF conv eo ic T0 GETA SHARE OF CONVERSE STARTECH PUT YOURSELF IN THEIR SHOES. 119 W. Mtn. Linda said the local com- mittee has spent over a year abstracting the entire 1850 census which will be publish- ed in the 200 page book. All schedules have been abstracted: population; slave; mortality; social statistics; agriculture; and industry. Very few census abstracts include all the schedules, but this publica- tion includes all records pro- perly abstracted and index- ted. The 1850 census-taker Rp e- om nN KM Native Linda Adams Bell Helps Compile Gaston History recorded the name, age, oc- cupation, birthplace, and other date for every person residing in Gaston County at that time. Other special features include lists of slave owners; persons who died one year prior to June 30, 1850; lists of farmers and what they produced; lists of mines, saw mills, and cotton mills with what they produced.
