The Kings Mountain Board of Education approved the Program in Kings Mountain ast October at the request of Sandy Thomas of the Pioneer Girl Scout Council and Deb- bie Mauney, 1985 Vice Presi- dent of West School PTA. Children in the participating schools were shown a film on home safety and introduced to the Safety Haven logo. Parents were then canvassed as to who would be willing and acceptable to serve as Safety Haven Homes. Mrs. Mauney said that anyone in- terested in serving as a Safe- ty Haven Home for children walking to and from school during the school months can contact her for additional in- formation. Safety Havens are usually homes or businesses where children can go to get emergency assistance - from bandaging of a skinned knee to shelter from an abductor. Goal of Safety Havens is to deter crimes against children and providing a climate of physical and emotional security for them, said Mrs. Mauney. The program, not only involves providing places of refuge, but also educates both children and parents about potentially dangerous situations. Not every one qualifies for a Safety Haven Home, accor- ding to Mrs. Mauney, who gave this description of a Safety Haven Volunteer. You must have a telephone in your home or business.
