Comani Caldwells Honored By Oak View Church On Sunday, September 15, members of Oak View Bap- tist Church honored Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Caldwell for their faithful service to the music ministry. Mr. Caldwell was choir director for 38 years (1947-85), while his wife Mildred, served as organist for a large portion of these years. George Davis, chairperson of the Board of Deacons, presented the couple with a mantle clock, symbolic of the church’s appreciation for their long time service. Steeves, Cleveland County Health - Director, was presented the | prestigious ‘‘Citation of Merit Award’’ at the awards ban- uet of the Annual Meeting of the North Carolina Public Health Association on September 19, 1985 in Asheville. The ‘Citation of Merit Award” is given each year to an individual in recognition of outstanding contributions to public health in North Carolina. Mr. Steeves received the award for continually leading his staff with vision and foresight, fostering a multidisciplinary approach to the solution of public health problems, attracting and sustaining a competent and professional staff for the operation of the Cleveland County Health Department, and making hard decisions on the basis of what is best for the agency and the public health and not on the basis of ease or popularity. A Service of Dedication was held on Sunday evening. The Rev. Robert Moore, pester of the church, gave a rief summary of John’s con- tributions to the church. The first program, inaugurateing the ‘Music At Oak View Series” was ‘a recital of sacred piano music played in honor of Mr. Caldwell by Timothy Belk, Director of Music. An informal reception followed in the social hall. Benefit Pageant October 27 The Second Annual Christmas Seal Pageant will be presented by the American Lung Association of North Carolina, Catawba Valley Region, on Sunday, October 27. It will be held at the Lincoln County Citizens Center Auditorium in Lin- colnton at 7:00 p.m. The rehearsal will be 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. the same day. Contestants must be a resi- dent of Alexander, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, or Rowan county. Pageant divisions will in- clude: Little Miss for 4-6 years old, Young Miss for 7-10 years old, Junior Miss for 11-13 years old, and Miss for 14-17 years old. There will be a winner and a first and se- cond runner-up in each age division. The winner will receive a crown, trophy, ban- ner, and flowers. Runners-up will receive a trophy. A photogenic category will also be offered using the same age divisions as the pageant Only one winner will chosen from each division and will receive a free per- sonal color photograph and photograph sitting with Payseur Studio of Newton. To enter this division, bring a hoto (any size in color or lack and white) to the rehearsal. There is a $25 entry fee for the pageant and a separate $10 entry fee for the photogenic division. Contestants may be spon- sored by either parents, " businesses, or interested in- dividuals.
