Gore To Speak At Vance-Aycock Dinner U.S. Senator Albert Gore, Jr. (D-TN) will be the featured speaker at the Democrats’ 25 Annual Vance- Aycock Dinner in Asheville on Saturday, October 5, an- nounced Democratic Chair- man Wade Smith. “We're so pleased to have Senator Gore,” said Smith. ‘‘He represents the bright, in- novative, forward-looking Southern Democrats who are playing an ever larger role in directing our nation and our party. His hard work, thoughtfulness and intellect have won him the respect of Battle Events To Be Retraced The Over-mountain Victory Trail Association will retrace for the 11th consecutive year the events leading to the defeat of Colonel Patrick Ferguson in the Battle of Kings Mountain on October 7, 1780. The 14-day march began on September 24 when the marchers set out from Dunn’s Meadow near Ab- ingdon, Virginia. These modern-day patriots will follow the original route and arrive at Quaker Meadows near Morganton, North Carolina where they will converge with a con- tingent from Wilkes County and Surry Counties, North Carolina. They will be joined by additional participants along the route, arriving at Cowpens National Battlefield on October 6. The marchers will leave Cowpens National Battlefield on the morning of October 7 for their final trek to Kings Mountain. The mar- chers will arrive at Kings Mountain National Military Park at 3:00 p.m., the time in which the battle began on Oc- tober 7, 1789. Upon arrival of the marchers, a special pro- gram commemorating the 205th Anniversary of the Bat- tle of Kings Mountain will be held in “the phitheater. On Saturday, October 5, and Sunday, October 6, you can experience the activities of military camp life during the 18th century. The Guilford Militia, a group dedicated to bringing back a part of history and heritage to the public, will recreate the activities of an 18th cen- tury muster. As with today’s National Guard, civilian males were mustered several times a year to be trained as a military unit. These musters were necessary because the militia units needed discipline and a standard drill before joining the Con- tinental forces as they did in such battles as Cowpens and Guilford Courthouse. However in most cases these rugged individuals were at their best when skirmishing on their own as was the case at the Battle of Kings Moun- tain, where a group of Patriot militia defeated a better trained Loyalist force under Colonel Patric Ferguson. The encampment will not only feature military drilling with musket and rifle demonstrations, but will also offer several camp life ac- tivities which include: camp cooking, basket weaving, bullet and button molding, revolutionary medicine, and other 18th century crafts. Saturday’s events will begin at 11:00 a.m. and end at 5:00 pm. . Sunday’s activities wilsl gin at 9:00 a.m. and last un- til 4:00 p.m. Also on October 5 and 6, the Broad River Genealogical Society will be set up in the Visitor Center to give people information on how to their f amily ancestors. The society will have materials on hand . which may provide you with ~ the lead t. that you have been needing to find that lost ~ ancestor, There is no charge for the event. The public is invited and encouraged to attend! Keep HORD ON THE BOARD Paid Pol.
