GAINS YARDS FOR MOUNTIES - Vince Sullens (27) picks up yardage for Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers in Friday’s 45-9 victory over North Gaston. The Mountaineers closed out their regular season schedule with a 9-1 record. They battle Canton Pisgah Friday in Canton in the first round of the state 3-A playoffs. KM Jayvees Finish 7-1-1 From Page 2-A Daron Hillman, a junior who has been playing on the kickoff team all year, moved into the backfield for the first time this season in the third uarter and rambled 34 yorgs or a TD. Bumgardner’s point-after made it 38-0. North Gaston finally put together a 70-yard drive behind the passing of quarterback Tommy Brown and the hard running of big fullback Eric Wallace to cut it to 38-3 midway of the fourth period. Jimmy Sanders’ 32-yard field goal accounted for the scoring. The Mountaineers got their final touchdown of the night moments later when reserve tailack Vince Sullens raced 43 yards off tackle and Bumgardner added the point after to make it 45-3. North Gaston drove 70 yards after the kickoff with Wallace go- ing to final eight yards. kk The victory, KM’s sixthina row since a 10-0 loss to Shelby in the fourth game of the season, gave the Moun- taineers their highest con- ference finish since 1979 when they finished second to state champion South Point. The 1979 and 1976 Mountaineer REGINA BROWN LISA BUCHANAN teams were 8-2 overall. The nine regular season victories matched the output of the 1963 team (9-0-1) and the 1960 team (9-1). The only Moun- taineer teams to win 10 games were the 1955, 1956 and 1964 outfits and the Moun- taineers will have an oppor- tunity to match those records Friday at Canton. : “We were real pleased with the victory,” said Head Coach Denny Hicks, who is now 16-14 in three Joos at the Mountaineer helm. *‘I thought we started out slow, but I was pleased with the way we came out in the se- cond half. We came off the ball good and hit people hard. “That kind of a ballgame makes it tough,” he added. ‘“‘We thought we could control the ball on them and not have to live on the big play but we found ourselves picking up only one or two yards on the first two downs and having to break a big play.” North Gaston moved the .ball well on the Moun- taineers, gaining 155 yards rushing and 110 passing, but the Wildcat’s young defense was unable to stop the Moun- taineer offense, which has improved Soadily since early | -in the year. Wa the best-looking backs Kings SUSIE MOORE JENNIFER BOHELER Four On All-Conference, Moore Player Of The Year Kings Mountain High placed four players on the All- Southwestern 3-A Conference volleyball team which was an- nounced this week. The Mountainettes’ senior standout, Susie Moore, was voted SWC Player of the Year and Coach Diana Bridges was named Coach of the Year. Others on the All-Conference team were Regina Brown, Jennifer Boheler and Lisa Buchanan. Moore was the leading scorer for the Mountainettes who won their first SWC volleyball title with an 11-1 record. She averaged six points per game, had good serves 90 percent of the time, averaged four ace serves and three saves per game, and 90 percent of her sets were good sets. ~ Brown, a junior who was Co-Captain along with Moore, had 90 percent good serves, and averaged two ace serves, five down spikes, two saves and four points per game. Buchanan had good serves 95 percent of the time and averaged two down spikes and three points ood serves 85 percent of the time and averaged Boheler had r game. two down spikes and three points per game. ace, one of Mountain has faced, gained 95 yards rushing. “We were disappointed with our defensive perfor- mance in the fourth quarter when North Gaston got off two long drives,” said Hicks. “But, in all fairness to our defense, we were running straight ahead trying not to run up the score on them and left our defensive players on the field a lot.” The Mountaineers played without the services of sophomore tackle Wayne Brazzell, who was nursing a back injury, but Kevin Cham- pion filled in a did a good job. Hicks said he hopes to have Brazzell at full speed for F'ri- day’s playoff game. Mauney, Stephens Selected Senior standouts Calvin Stephens and Donald Mauney were selected as Moun- taineer Players of the Week following outstanding perfor- mances in Friday’s 45-9 vic- tory over North Gaston. Stephens, a 260-pound tackle, 170-pound linebacker, made five tackles each in the vic- tory which gave the Moun- taineers their best regular season since 1964. Stephens recorded one sack and Vauney caused a fumble. “Both played well both of- fensively and defensively,” said KMHS Coach Denny Hicks. “They’ve been two of our most consistent players all year and they deserve the honor.” KM Basketball Scrimmages Set Kings Mountain High's basketball teams will scrim- mage twice during the next week to prepare for the 1985-86 campaign.
