Mental Health § Sponsoring § Program a posal must be accom ~ deposit equal to 5% of the net bid. Do you have an ‘‘irregular person’ in your life? Accor- dingo Joyce Landorf, in her book ‘‘Irregular People’, they are poeple ‘who have the knack of wounding you every time you see them. They say the wrong thing, they ruin your day, they keep your emotions in constant turmoil and an irregular per- son is someone you can’t escape, usually a close relative - mother, father, hus- band, wife, brother, sister or in-law.” ‘Irregular people have similar personality traits. You can’t reason with them, can’t depend on them, and can’t expect any real support from them.” : As with Joyce Landorf’s ir- regular person, it seems that most of these persons have some degree of emotional deafness. “It is as though here and there in the. ir- regular persony mind, big chunks of denial block or plug their heart’s ability to hear.” Landorf goes on to say that “Once in awhile you’ll have a fairly normal conversation with Jour irregular person, in which he or she seems to hear quite well. When this hap- pens, you are so pleased that you eagerly plunge ahead and boldly share something which is of vital importance, only to find you are not talk- ing to a Jing, breathing human being, but a stone mask. A sudden and profound deafness has overtaken them, and instant denial sets up like cement in their ears to block out everything you've just said.” ; Barbara Muse, Director of Support Programs, Mental Health Association in North Carolina, adds that it has been her experience after more than 25 years of coping ‘with an irregular person that during this season of the year, irregular persons seem to have a special knack for seeing to it that no planned event will be carried out ac- cording to plan. ' However; there areways to ff learn to cope with these per. sons - ways to continue to love and accept them, ways to have good days in spite of this person. On Tuesday evening, January 7, Ms. Muse will be speaking about what happens to families who are struggl- ing with irregular persons. She will talk about how these families can learn to change their response, and how they can again enjoy life. Under a $64,100 grant from Kate Bitting Reynolds Health Care Trust, Ms. Muse is ac- tively working to begin REACH (REAssurance to eaCH) programs throughout North Carolina, helping families of these Irregular People learn new and better ‘ways of responding. The Mental Health Associa- tion in Gaston County, an af- filiate of MHA in North Carolina, is sponsoring this program, to be held in the United Way Bldg., 200 E. Franklin Blve., at 7:00 p.m. The program is free of charge. If you have an Ir- regular person in your family (and most people do) or have a close friend who does, you will not want to miss this discussion. Be sure to invite that close friend also.
