Mountaineer Wrestlers Repeat As SWC Tournament Champions Kings Mountain High’s wrestlers tacked on the Southwestern 3-A Conference tournament championship to their regular season crown in the annual tourney at Shelby. The Mountaineers compil- ed 158% points and had six wrestlers win individual championships. KM’s undefeated 148-pounder, Vince Sullens, was voted the tournament’s most outstan- ding wrestler. He recorded a 27-second pin over Keith Parnell of South Point in the finals. Burns, which trailed the Mountaineers by only a half point going into the cham- pionship round, finished a distant second with 125 points. Shelby was third with 111%, followed by R-S Cen- tral 10612, North Gaston 104, South Point 74 and Chase 65. The other five individual champions for the Moun- taineers were 101-pound sophomore John Turner, who “decisioned Jay Fry of R-S SULLENS HILLMAN Central in the finals; 108-pound soph Tony Parker, who pinned Monty Huggins of R-S in the second period in the finals; 141-pound junior Daren Hillman, who pinned Jeff Conner of Chase in 39 seconds in the finals; 158-pound senior Roderick Boyce, who won a technical fall over R-S Central’s Chris Fry in the finals; and sophomore heavyweight Wayne. Brazzell, won won a 15-8 decision over Steve Herr- ing of Burns in the finals. Kings Mountain’s Burns Sweeps Mountaineers Friday Burns continued its 1985-86 dominance of Kings Moun- tain basketball teams Fri- day, sweeping the varsity squads in a Southwestern 3-A Conference twinbill at the KMHS gym. The Burns girls turned back Kings Mountain for the third time this season, 55-43, and the’ Burns boys won their second game of the season over the Mountaineers 62-48. The victory by the Lady Bulldogs, coached by former KM teacher Tommy Pruett, kept the Burns five tied with R-S Central for the SWC lead. Like the two earlier games, ‘Friday’s battle was close Kings Mountain’s Moun- taineers edged closer to the 500 mark in Southwestern 3-A Conference play Tuesday at East Rutherford, defeating the Cavaliers 6749 to bring their record to 5-6 in the SWC and 7-10 overall. Mike Woods and Denorris Wilson were the only double-digit scorers for KM with 12 and 11 points, respecively, but 11 players took part in the scoring act. The loss dropped the KM girls to 4-6 in the SWC and 9-7 overall. The Mountaineers found the going rough from the beginning. Burns jumped out to a 14-10 first period lead and a 27-18 halftime advantage and increased their margin to as many as 19 points in the se- cond half. They held the KM ladies to just six points while scoring 18 themselves and building a 32-16 halftime advantage. Jayvees’ Unbeaten String Ends Kings Mountain High’s jayvee basketballers lost their first game of the season last week but also posted a pair of victories to bring their overall record to 14-1. The Mountaineers defeated Chase 74-45 Tuesday night, fell to Burns 59-51 Friday and defeated East Rutherford 64-57 last night. Coach Gary Brigman’s charges host North Gaston Friday at 4:30 and R-S Cen- tral Tuesday at 4:30. The tournament title gave the Mountaineers both the regular season and tourna- ment championships for the second year in a row. The BOYCE PARKER either the regular season or tournament, or both, in five of the last nine seasons under Coach Steve Moffitt. Many members of the team will be going to Charlotte Fri- day and Saturday for the an- nual Sectional Tournament at West Mecklenburg.
