BY: LONNIE DARNELL FIRST PRESBYTERIAN Springtime is about to emerge from its sleepy rest. And with it will come an ex- travaganza of life and color. Our senses will be at their sharpest, trying to take it all in. We will wonder. We will enjoy. But will we look for reasons and answers? Everything that occurs in nature has a purpose, and perhaps the most involving aspect of spring is trying to understand the purpose behind what we see. In the midst of our fascina- tion, we come to realize that the purpose for earthworms is to aerate the soil and make it fecund. The crab and the crayfish collect the garbage of ponds and lakes and streams. The brightness of flowers is to attract insects and lure them to be pollen carriers to flowers afar. One of the barest essentials for understanding nature is to know that everything exists for a specific reason. Nothing is for show. An expression commonly said is, ‘‘A person has to live, doesn’t he (or she)?” An employee approaches his boss, asking for a raise in pay, and the employer wants to know a reason. The rising cost of living, a growing fami- by, explaining that money oesn’t go as far as it used to—these are cited. And the employee finally adds, “A person has got to live.” Doubtlessly, at some time or another we have all used this expression to explain why we did this or that. But what would be our reply if so- meone countered us with the uestion, “What for?’ Why oes a person have to live? To what purpose? The most fundamental ex- planation of anything is the prose it serves, and no one nows much about anything unless he knows its purpose. A person who knew all about automobiles except the fact that they were to! ride in would be quite stupid about them. A person who knew about the printing and bin- ding of books and still did not understand that books are to be read would lack an elemental understanding of books. Anyone who knows all about high school and college curricula, diplomas and degrees, and still is ignorant about the purpose of educa- tion is grossly uninformed about education. We need to know the reason or pote of things. In a world such as ours, we need to ask the basic questions. People who are building bigger, more beautiful houses than ever before on earth should ask, “But will the house be a home, built on loving deeds as well as brick and mortar and stone?’ Bet- ter houses—what for? Members of churchs with a big budget, an impressive staff of ministers, and highly organized constitutions and bylaws might well ask, “But does it lead the people to a vital relationship with God?”’ Many magazine articles not be to long before the New England Journal of Medicine can announce that the average life Sxpediancy is 100 years. It may be good to live longer. It is far more impor- tant to live better. Longer lives—what for? Saint Bernard of Clairvaux placed over his door the in- scription: ‘Bernard, why are ou here?” so that every time e entered his room in the monastery he had to face and books are being written about ‘how to relax’ and “how to succeed’ and ‘‘how to overcome stress’ and “how to have better sex’’ and so on. Relaxation, success, peace, sexual fulfillment? What for? We are living longetoday than people have ever before ho to. Through modern medicine and technology, children born in America to- day have a life expectancy three times that of children in Christ’ day and age. It may Turn To Page 3-C Relwarty To 89°.
