Mountaineers Whip East For Fifth Straight Win Kings Mountain’s Moun- taineers rode the four-hit pit- ching of sophomore Monty Deaton and a 10-hit plate at- tack to their fifth straight Southwestern 3-A Conference victory Tuesday night at East Rutherford, 7-2. The Mountaineers return home Thursday at 7:30 to face North Gaston and close out first round of SWC play Tuesday night at Shelby. “It was a good win for us after beating South Point Fri- day,” said KM Coach David Heffner. “I thought we might be down after a big victory, but our guys played real well.” Deaton fanned eight and ‘walked only one in picking up his first victory. Thomas Breakfield led the KM hitting with two singles, a home run and two runs batted in. Todd Fleming and Doc Boheler added two hits each and Del Postell, Larry Yar- borough and Mike Southards had one each. Yarborough’s two-run single gave the Mounties a 2-0 lead in the second inning. They stretched it to 4-1 with a pair in the fifth. Breakfield started the inning with a homer and Fleming walked and later scored on Postell’s single. The Mountaineers stretch- ed their lead to 6-1 in the sixth with a pair of runs. Breakfield’s single plated Southards, who had walked and moved up on a sacrifice by Roderick Boyce, and Breakfield stole second and. then scored on a single by Fleming. After East scored in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-2, the Mounties closed out the scoring in the top of the seventh with a run on three walks and a passed ball. KMHS Softball Team Tied For Conference Lead Kings Mountain High’s -girls softball team won two ‘games during the past week - to pull into a tie with R-S Cen- ~tral for first place in the Southwestern 3-A Con- : ference. - The Mountainettes, now 4-1 a . Softball Tourney Planned The annual Knights of Pythias Women’s Spring Softball Tournament will be held April 18-20 in Cher- ryville. The event is open to all women’s slowpitch teams. Entry fee is $60 and each team is to furnish all of its softballs. The softball is to be a medium range ball. For information and to receive an entry form, call Robert Hayes (435-6990 or 435-3241) or Lester Canipe (435-3473). Spey in the SWC, travel to R-S Cen- tral Thursday to settle the first place tie. The KM girls host Chase Monday at 4 p.m. Last Thursday, the KM ten edged South Point 10-9 in nine innings. Tammy Hutchins slammed a solo homer in the top of the ninth to break the tie and the KM defense shut off the South Point attack in the bottom of the inning. Johnna Patterson led the KM plate attack with 2-for-4. Susie Moore drove in a pair of runs and Cindy Bullock had an RBI single. The Mountainettes whip- ped Burns 1541 Monday after- noon at Lancaster Field. Stephanie Owens, Linda Green, Patterson and Regina Brown led the KM plate at- tack with two hits each. “We did a good job last week,”’” noted Coach Bruce Clark. ‘Our hitting has come around for us. USPS GARY STEWART Managing Editor ELIZABETH STEWART News Editor North Gaston Here Thursday Mounties Take Over First and scored on another throw- Kings Mountain’s Moun- taineers broke a 21-game South Point conference winn- ing streak and took over sole possession of first place in the Southwestern 3-A Conference Friday night with a 5-3 vic- tory on the Raiders’ dia- mond. The victory was the fourth straight in the league for Coach David Heffner’s charges who return home Thursday night to face North Gaston in a 7:30 p.m. contest. The Mountaineers travel to Shelby Monday night. Junior righthander Rusty Bumgardner went the distance Friday to pick up his third straight SWC victory. He struck out nine batters and walked only one and retired 11 of the last 12 bat- ters he faced. : All five Kings Mountain runs were unearned. The Red Raiders led by 2-0 after three innings and 3-1 going into the top of the sixth when the Mountaineers scored three times to win the game. THOMAS BREAKFIELD KM Golfers Tie For First . Kings Mountain High’s golfers tied Shelby for first ‘place in a three-team match Thursday at | Mountain Country Club. The Lions and Moun- taineers had 351 team scores. Burns was third with 371. Medalist for the KM team was Bo Ballard with an 85. Paul Hendricks shot 86, Bryant Wells 88 and Ashli McGinnis 92. The Mountaineers travel to Cleghorne Country Club near Rutherfordton Monday for a match with R-S Central, North Gaston, Burns and Chase. Boyce re-entered the game as a runner and moved to se- cond when Larry Yarborough gained life on a fielder’s choice. On a bunt by Thomas Breakfield, the throw to first base was wild and Boyce scored to tie the game at 3-all PAUL NEISLER and the other two runners ad- vanced to second and third. Yarborough then scored the winning run on a passed ball and Breakfield got an in- surance tally on a fielder’s choice. Kings Mountain scored its first run in the top of the fourth when Boyce was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a throwing error ing error. The Mountaineers cut it to 3-2 in the fifth when Boheler walked, moved to second when Bobby Pearson reached base on an error, took third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a passed ball. The Red Raiders, who fell to 3-1 in the conference and 6-2 overall, had not lost a SWC contest since the 1984 season. The Red Raiders won their final regular season an game that year against East Gaston, went 17-0 in the con- ference last year and had won three straight this season. KMHS Cindermen Second In SWC Meet At Belmont Kings Mountain High’s track team finished second in a five-team Southwestern 3-A Conference meet Thursday at South Point. Shelby’s Lions ran away with team honors with 106% points. Kings Mountain scored 46%, followed by South Point with 45, Burns with 40 and North Gaston with 29. Calvin Stephens set a school record in the shot put, hurling it 51 feet, eight inches to win the event. He was also third in the discus with a throw of 132'1”. ~~ 2 Stephens ‘was, the only first ‘place winner for the Moun- taineers but Coach John Goforth’s men picked u several third and fourt places to grab enough points to finish second. Mike Woods was second in the high jump with a leap of 6°2”. Third place finishers, in ad- dition to Stephens, were Wayne Brazzell in the shot put (43’7’’), 800-relay (1:34), Cliff Meeks in the 1600 meters (4:59), John Pettis in the in- termediate hurdles (44.75), Anthony Hillman in the 200 meters (23.7) and Meeks in the 3200 meters (10:49.3). Fourth place finishers for KM included Aubrey Hollifield in the 110 high hurdles (17.3) and 300 in- termediate hurdles (45.5), 400-meter relay (45.6), Steve Mauney in the 800 meters (2:10) and Steve Lineberry in the 3200 meters (11:28.8). Finishing fifth for the Mountaineers were Robert Murphree in the pole vault (90’), Martin Spencer in the 100-meter dash (11.4), Lineberry in the 1600 meters (5:11), Lenny Rayford in the 400 meters (54.2), Sharman Wilson in the 800 meters (2:18.3) and Tony Moore in the 200 meters (24.5). The Mountaineers travel to Chase Thursday to face East Rutherford, Chase, R-S Cen- tral and Shelby. They will return to John Gamble Stadium April 10 to host Burns, Chase and R-S Cen- al. . Sipe’s Basketball Camp “June 9-14 A The third annual Cham- ions of Tomorrow Basket- all Camp will be held June 9-14 at the Kings Mountain High School gym. The camp will run from 8 a.m. until 12 noon each day. Larry Sipe, head boys basketball coach at KMHS, will direct the camp. It is open to boys and girls in grades two through eight. The first 35 applicants will be accepted. Each camper will receive a t KM High basketball, camp T-shirt, handbook and certificate. Trophies will be awarded to outstanding campers. The cost is $35. Fifteen dollars must accompany the application, with the re- mainder due on the first day of camp.
