Kings Mountain had eight hits with Thomas Breakfield leading the way with two. Todd Fleming, Doc Boheler, Bobby Pearson, Del Postell, Mike Southards added one each. Boheler’s two-run homer in the third inning cut the North Gaston lead to 6-2 and Breakfield’s two-run double sparked a three-run rally in the fourth that made it 6-5. North Gaston brought its sticks out again in the top of the fifth to score three runs for a 9-5 lead and chase Bumgardner. Sophomore Brent Bagwell finished up. The Mountaineers cut the margin to 9-7 with a pair of runs in the sixth on a two-run single by Todd Fleming, but a couple of KM errors opened the floodgates again in the top of the seventh and the Wildcats put the victory on ice. Golfers Second Kings Mountain High’s golfers tied for a second place in a four-team Southwestern 3-A Conference match at Cleghorne Country Club near Rutherfordton Monday. Host R-S Central won the match with a 321 score, followed by the Mountaineers and Burns at 362 and North Gaston at 392. Meadlist for the Moun- taineers was Paul Hendricks with an 87. Chris Henson shot 88, Eric Hicks 92 and Bo Ballard 93. \ Loss To Shelby Drops Mounties To Third Place Kings Mountain High’s baseballers slipped from first to third place in the Southwestern 3-A Conference with a pair of losses during the past week. The Mountaineers, 5-0 at the beginning of last week, fell to North Gaston 14-7 Thursday to fall into a three- way tie for first place with Shelby and South Point. Tues- day night at Shelby, the Mountaineers fell to the Lions, 8-1, and dropped to third with a 5-2 SWC record. Shelby and South Point now share the league lead with 6-1 ‘marks. Kings Mountain tries to re- bound Friday at 4 p.m. at Chase. The Mountaineers host R-S Central Tuesday night. Shelby built an 8-0 lead after four innings Tuesday _ night to hand KM’s ace righthander Rusty Bumgard- ner his second straight loss after three consecutive wins to open the season. Kings Mountain’s only run came in the last inning. The Mountaineers manag- ed. only six hits off Troy Deaton, who went the distance to earn the win. Bumgardner was relieved in the third by sophomore Brent Bagwell and in the fourth by senior Paul Neisler. Monty Deaton’s double in the seventh inning plated the only KM run. Host SWC Meet Thursday Kings Mountain High finished fourth in a six-team track meet Thursday at Chase. Shelby won the event with 170 points, followed by Crest 106, East Rutherford 91, Kings Mountain 72, R-S Cen- tral 54 and Chase 19. Kings Mountain’s only first place winner was Calvin Stephens who won the discus with a throw of 144’5”. Stephens also picked up a second place finish in the shot put with a throw of 49’7”’. Stephen Mauney was se- cond in the 800 meter run and Kings Mountain’s 800-relay team (Otis Brooks, John Pet- tis, Tony Moore and Edwin Sherer) also finished second.
