The KM victory and North Gaston’s 6-3 win over first place South Point knotted KM and South Point with 7-2 SWC records. Shelby dropped a 10-9 decision to Chase and fell into a third place tie with North Gaston, both with 6-3 records. The Mountaineers had 103% points, followed by Burns with 72, R-S Central with 6114 and Chase with 23. Kings Mountain grabbed eight. first places, led by senior Calvin Stephens who won both the shot put and discus. He hurled the shot 51 feet and the discus 129’5”. *' Charles Mauney won the pois vault with a jump of nine feet and Mike Woods won the high jump with a leap of six feet. Edwin Sherer won the long jump with a leap of 202. Against Concord, Ross had 16, Allison 14 and Kevin Arm- strong 10. Ross made the all-state team. Members of the KM team were Brian Adams, Allison, Armstrong, Spencer Brown, West Conner, Darren Hager, Hollifield, Ross, and Barry Turner. KM’s 15-17 year old teams will play in the AAU Junior Olympic Tournament this weekend. Junior High Golfers Win Kings Mountain Junior High's golfers defeated Crest and Burns Thursday in a Western N.C. Junior High Athletic Association match. The Patriots compiled a 155 team score. Burns was se- cond with 179 and Crest shot 180. Kings Mountain’s Brady Goforth was medalist for the match with a two-under-par 34. Brad Wilson shot 35, Shan Conner 41 and John Van Dyke 45. KM Breaks Loss Skid With Win Over Chase Kings Mountain’s Moun- taineers broke a two-game losing streak and bounced back into the thick of the bat- tle for the Southwestern 3-A Conference title Friday after- noon at Chase with a 3-2 win over the Trojans. The win moved Kings Mountain into a tie for second place with Shelby, which lost to South Point. The Red Raiders took over sole possession of first place with a 7-1 record, followed by Kings Mountain and Shelby with 6-2 marks. Sophomore righthander Monty Deaton went the distance for the Moun- taineers to pick up his second SWC win in a row. He scat- tered nine hits and struck out nine. Kings Mountain built up a 3-0 lead after three innings before the Trojans rallied for singletons in the fourth and sixth innings. Thomas Breakfield’s two- run single gave Deaton a 2-0 lead in the second. Deaton walked to start the rally and stole second. Mike Southards singled and Larry Yar- borough walked to load the bases before Breakfield delivered. The Mountaineers added what turned out to be the win- ning run in the third when MONTY DEATON Doc Boheler walked, moved to third on a single by Bobby Pearson and scored on a sacrifice fly to rightfield by Deaton. Breakfield led an eight-hit KM plate attack with three singles. Del Postell had two hits and Pearson, Southards and Yarborough added one apiece. Girls Softball Wins Two Kings Mountain High’s girls softball team pulled into a tie for second place in the Southwestern 3-A Conference during the past week with victories over Shelby and North Gaston.
