HELP LEAD BC VICTORIES — Larry Yarborough, left photo, and Todd Fleming, right, have gotten some big hits and played good defense to help lead Bessemer City’s American Legion baseball team to seven victories in 10 starts BC Juniors Win Pair Bessemer City’s American Legion Juniors split four games in Area Four play last week, defeating Cherryville 10-6 and Hickory 9-8 and los- ing to Newton 16-11 and Lenoir 8-1. The BC nine, now 7-4, hosts Morganton Friday, Newton Saturday and Cherryville Monday. Newton grabbed a 7-0 lead after 21, innings Monday and survived a six-run sixth inn- ing by Bessemer City to win its second game of the year. Bobby Mantooth started on the mound for BC and took the loss. He was relieved in the third by Paul Neisler, in the fifth by Brent Bagwell and in the seventh by Todd Fleming. A trio of Kings Mountain products--Rusty Bumgard- ner, Bobby Pearson and Larry Yarborough--led a 14-hit Bessemer City batting attack with three hits each. Thomas Breakfield and Mike Southards, also from Kings Mountain, added two hits each. Bessemer scored a run in the eighth inning to break a 66 tie and added three in- surance runs in the top of the ninth to defeat Cherryville Tuesday night in Cherryville. 5% Down ON SELECTED MODELS Limited Time & Supply 9 A.M. Bruce Capps, who just joined the team off Bessemer City’s state finalist high school team, worked the first six innings. Bumgardner singled to lead off the BC eighth and scored the winning run two outs later on a single by Southards. Singles by Yar- borough and Todd Fleming and Breakfield’s double pro- duced three runs in the ninth. Southards and North Gaston’s Jimmy Holland led the BC plate attack with three hits each. Breakfield and Mantooth added two hits each. Terry Thornburg singled “ andscored what turned out to: be the winning run in the top of the eighth Friday at Hickory. That run gave Bessemer a 9-6 lead. Hickory came back to score two in the bottom of the eighth and load- ed the bases in the bottom of the ninth but couldn’t score. Bumgardner worked the first six innings and got the win and Capps came on in the seventh and earned a save.
