The number of teams in a con- ference helps determine the number of representatives in the playoffs. The sites for all of the playoff games are predeter- mined and are designated by either top line or bottom line in the playoff brackets. The only exception occurs when a number-one team from a con- ference is paired against a lower-seeded team from the same conference. The number one team will always play at home in that situa- tion. Swain County is the defen- ding 1-A state champion, having beaten North Edgecombe 32-0 for the 1985 championship. Lexington took the 2-A crown a year ago, beating Fuquay-Varina 42-12 in the final. Williams High of Burl- ington will be defending the 3-A championship which it won by downing Forest Hills 7-3 in ‘85, and Greensboro Page will try to extend its str- ing of 4-A championships to four in the coming season. Page knocked off Terry San- ford 26-20 in the 1985 title game. Last year’s NCHSAA ‘Dlayosts were, from a finan- cial standpoint, the most suc- cessful in history, grossing a record of over $848,000, an in- crease of over 50 percent from the year before. The 1985 playoffs were the first since the Division II format was abandoned and 32-team draws used in each close. The Southwestern 3-A Con- ference, of which Kings Mountain is a member, will have three teams in the playoffs. The top two SWC teams will open the playoffs at home and the number three team will travel.
