EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES WEEK
The week of September 21-28 has been designated Na-
tional Emergency Medical Services Week by the
American College of Emergency Physicians in order to
increase public awareness of this vital aspect of medical
care. Governor Martin has decreed the week as
Emergency Medical Services Week for the State of North
Emergency Medical Services Week is designated to
recognize those men, women, and institutions that
dedicate themselves to specialize in providing treatment
for emergency conditions in any specialty, as well as
those routine medical problems that end up in Emergen-
cy Rooms. From severe problems like a child with snif-
fles or a sore throat; these professionals are trained to
handle them all. It’s an emotionally trying job, too, deal-
ing with death and bad diseases; but the Emergency
Room is the place where this is all handled 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Kings Mountain is fortunate to have a well equipped
and staffed Emergency Room of its own at Kings Moun-
tain Hospital. They are prepared to handle almost any
emergency at any time. The essence of emergency
medicine 1s to at least stabilize a critical patient so that
definitive care can be delivered where appropriate. To do
this, there is always a physician in the Emergency Room
stationed there for 24 hour shifts, always ready to handle
What is a medical emergency? Some situations are ob-
vious emergencies such as a gunshot wound or a heart at-
tack but the true answer is whatever a patient feels may
be an emergency. If a person has a family physician (as
all people should), a call to their doctor or the person on
call for their group of physicians can direct the patient
when and where to seek medical help. Some problems
are best handled by a doctor they can continue to follow
up with in an office setting. The Emergency Room at
Kings Mountain Hospital also welcomes calls at 739-3601,
if a person has questions about whether they should see a
In conjunction with Emergency Medical Services
Week, Cleveland County Emergency Medical Services

Room and the hospital can always be set up by calling
Teenia Henderson at 739-3601. The hospital will be spon-
soring a Health Fair Saturday, October 25, and this will
be another time that the public can tour the hospital or
the Emergency Room in particular. Details on the Health
Fair will be forthcoming in the Herald soon, so watch for

The Kings Mountain
Rescue Squad asked the
county to take over the am-
bulance and rescue service in
Kings Mountain in November
1985 because of lack of per-
sonnel and insufficient
number of EMT’s. Since
November 1985, the Kings
Mountain Squad had served
as a back up only for
Emergency Medical Services
and rescue services only, the
EMS operating out of Kings
Mountain Hospital.
The petition requests the
board of commissioners
allow the KM Squad to be
dispatched for ‘‘transports’”
as a ‘primary responder’ for
ambulance service during a
24 hours period of coverage in
Kings Mountain from Satur-
day afternoon at 5 p.m. until
Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m.
Captain Byers said that
when the KM Squad gave up
the ambulance and rescue
service the KM Squad
numbered only eight EMT's.
“We're in a position now to
serve the Kings Mountain
area and we want to do that,”
he said.
