Historical Garden is the se- cond phase in a master plan for the Sandhills Regional Ar- boretum, located on a 14 acres, wheel-chair accessible site on the campus of San- dhills Community College. The Landscape Gardening Program at Sandhills Com- munity College is unique in the N.C. Community College System and was established in 1968. Sandhills graduates now work throughout the na- tion in responsible positions in the horticulture industry. Grants from numerous citizens and private and public organizations have made possible the original classroom building, greenhouses and equipment. The historical garden con- cept, according to local members of Magnolia Garden Club, began as part of the statewide celebration of America’s 400th anniver- sary festivities com- memorating the attempted colonization of Roanoke Island in 1584. The plan calls for a historic replica of a period garden similar to those which existed in Elizabethan times.
