Page 4 - FRIDAY’S HEROE'S—HERALD—RECORD—EAGLE—BANNER—NEWS—Wednesday, October 22, 1986 Fearless Goes With Shelby, Mounties, West Charlotte By FEARLESS The Great One came crashing down to earth for the first time this season in his prep pigskin ptedictions last Friday. We picked South Point over Chase, East Rutherford over Shelby, Cherryville over Mooresville, and East Mecklenburg over Hunter Huss. It didn’t happen, and as a result, Fearless was 6-4 on the week -- his worst mark of the season. For the year, Fearless is 45-12 for a .789 percentage. That dips the percentage under the 80 percent-plus mark for the first time this -Season. But Fearless is also dauntless. So he’s giving his best shots again. I’ve got an uncle who's eighty-six and has twenty children, the Jounges age two. I would notify the papers, but as an old sports scribe I'm waiting for the final score. That same uncle was a lit- tle embarrassed in Washington recently. He trailed a woman in a black gown and found out it was a Supreme Court Justice. Johnny showed up at the poolroom with his had swath- ed in bandages. ‘‘How’d you come to get banged up?’’ ask- ed his buddy. “You know that brown- eyed girl on the first floor whose husband is in jail?” aR N ~D) oy 2 2 S0.) Even Mason and Dixon had to draw the line somewhere. It was a sad day in the O’Leary house, for old O’Leary was breathing his last. His lawyer sat by his bedside writing the last will of the sick man as he dictated it. “The old lady should get $10,000, my brother Mike $5,000, my good friend Pat $3,000 and by Uncle Patrick $2,000.” The lawyer’s eyes brightened. ‘Where is all this money coming from?’ he asked. “Let ‘em work for it like I did!”’ roared O’Leary. I had a blind date recently and I told my friend I came back home later with a lump in my throat. ‘You really lik- ed her, huh?” he said. “No”, I replied. ‘‘She’s a karate ex- pert.” I recently brought home a library book whose cover read How To Hug. I rudely discovered that it was Volume VII of an en- cyclopedia! I said to a girl recently: “Darling, I've lost all my money. I haven't a cent in the world.” i She replied: “That won't make any difference, dear. I’ll love you just as much...even if I never see you again.” “I never go to church,” boasted a wandering member. ‘Perhaps you have noticed that?” “Yes, I have noticed that,” @ said his pastor. “Well, the reason I don’t go go is that there are so many hypocrites there.” ‘Oh, don’t let that keep you away,” replied the pastor, smiling blandly. “There is always room for one more, you know.”’ How about those North p Gaston Wildcats! They were 0-10 a year ago, but their for- tunes have been turned ‘around under second-year head coach Bob Patton. You like to see a guy like Patton win. He was kind and considerate to the media last year when his team struggled all year. He goes out of his way to help the newspaper and radio people, realizing they have a job to do, just like he does. A special Fearless salute to him. The Wildcats know they are going into Friday’s game at least a three-touchdown underdog against Shelby, which handed East Ruther- ford its first league loss at Shelby last Friday with an impressive 20-7 win. At the same time, the | Wildcats are fighting for one of three playoff berths open to Southwestern 3-A Con- ference teams this year. An shocker over Shelby would be | the biggest football win ever at North Gaston. BILL MONROE FATHER OF BLUEGRASS } gging Lincoln County Citizens’ Center Lincolnton, N.C. That shows character. Following Shelby comes Chase and Kings Mountain. It will still be a tough row to hoe. Having already lost to East Ruther- ford, the Wildcats in all pro- bability will need an upset win over either Shelby or Kings Mountain and a win over Chase to have a shot at the playoffs. I’m going to have to pick Shelby this week. The Golden Lions are very tough, their only loss coming at the hands of Kings Mountain. I’ll call it 22-6, Shelby. Speaking of Kings Moun- tain, they visit South Point Friday. The Mountaineers have a diversified offense and they're fun to watch (unless you're the opposition). oach Denny Hicks, who played for former Belmont High Coach Ray Shelton (who 11 in Wadesboro by having a ballpark named after him), a has done another fine coaching job. At the same time, Hicks is realistic enough and has been around long enough to know you can’t take anybody for granted. The Red Raiders are having it rough with an 0-7 season to date. The choice is for a 27-7 Kings Mountain win. East Gaston’s got some backfield men banged up and they dropped a 24-14 decision to West Mecklenburg last week. They play West Charlotte’s Lions this week at home. The choice is West Charlotte, 27-14. Cherryville will bounce back to capture a 20-16 win at Bunker Hill and West Lincoln will be too strong for Bessemer City, 22-6. And here’s how I see the other games: Ashbrook to keep on rolling, capturing a 27-0 win over South Mecklen- burg; Burns to edge R-S Cen- tral, 20-18; East Rutherford to bounce back with a 20-7 win over Chase; Hunter Huss to squeeze past North Mecklen- | burg, 20-14; and Harding to down Crest, 28-13. Mooresville Whips Ironmen In Homecoming Game From Page 1 rill, the Blue Devils ate up 207 yards of Rudisill real estate. The Mooresville defense also came up with three in- terceptions, two of which halted Cherryville drives. Tod Alexander, who hit the headlines recently with four interceptions at West Lin- coln, picked off a Davidson pass halting a first quarter drive. With 11:55 to play in the first half, Blakeney went into the end zone from two yards and the rout was on. Little's 16-yard run sparked that drive. Yet another intercep- tion at the 40 set the Blue Devils in motion again in Cherryville territory but linebacker Shane Brittian, a junior, recovered a fumble two plays later. With 2:23 remaining in the first half, Blakeney fielded a Bryan Short punt at his 40, shook off one tackler, and sped 60 yards for the second Blue Devil score, Little ran over for two points after. The Ironmen took posses- sion and Davidson passes carried them to the 15 where Mooresville stiffened and took over. . Later in the third stanza, Tod Alexander halted a Cher- ryville move with an in- terception in the end zone. Davidson again sparked the drive, throwing to tight end Shannon Bowyer and flanker Tim Whisnant. Early in the fourth and final period, the Blue Devils gained possession at their 41 and with 7:22 remaining in the game, the elusive Blakeney dashed 36 yards as QB Sherrill ‘‘faked out the en- tire Cherryville club.” Frank matthews kicked the 21st point. Ronald Foster returned the kick to the 36 and the Ironmen had their only | touchdown five plays later. Fullback Kevin Clinton raced in from 12 yards away but a pass for two failed. Mooresville, however, wasn’t through. The Devils took the kick and moved all the way to the Cherryville 23 where the locals took posses- sion with time running out. With Davidson picking up 16 and 12 yards on two runs (forced to run after not fin- ding a receiver), Cherryville moved into Mooresville coun- try but the QB was thrown for a seven-yard loss on the game’s final play. The Ironmen face a “must win’’ situation this week at Bunker Hill. yr ‘ {A { “mA ELECT SAM BEAM N.C. House Of Rep.
