From Page 1-A was the 14th man on the force when the late Hugh Logan ap- proached him about a job with the police department. From the third shift patrol job, he worked his way to the department head position and was acting chief for a number of years before the chief’s position was filled. Barrett Is Retiring On January 31 career in law enforcement, the best part of his job was the people with whom he served and those with whom he worked. ‘There are an awful lot of good people in this town’’ said Barrett. Barrett, who supervises four crews of officers,has em- phasized training and profes- sionalism in his department. Notary Public School Set The Continuing Education Department of Cleveland Technical College will spon- “sor a notary public school on - Monday, Jan.26 at 6 p.m. in ‘the Campus Center - Auditorium. The course will : be taught by Lynn Wilson. This course is required for : anyone wanting to apply for a ba notary public commission from the Secretary of State of North Carolina. An individual wishing to become a notary must have a high school diploma or its equivalent and purchase the approved manual,‘‘Notary Public Guidebook’’ which is on sale at Tech’s bookstore for $5. Registration will be held at the class meeting. A fee of $15 will be charged, although anyone over 65 may enroll free. For additional informa- tion, please call 484-4015. The jail, dispatcher officer and a small adjoining office for the chief comprised the then-law enforcement center. Now, the police department occupies what then was the city hall and Barrett hopes to see the day the police move into the old postoffice. “We've been lay- ing the groundwork for a long time and are hopeful that since the new postoffice has been built the city will be able to obtain the old postoffice building and use it for a renovated law enforcement building.”’ Before the new ci- ty hall was built, the police department was located at one time in the basement it now occupies on Piedmont Avenue. <3 et sl Barrett praised the officers in the Police Department and said many of them had gone back to school for additional training.“I hope they will continue to do that’ he said. | Q4 7 A volunteer in the Kings Mountain Fire Department, Barrett said he expects to continue his volunteer ser- vice. He is a deacon in First Presbyterian Church. Chief Barrett's family in- cludes his wife, Arlene Schneider Barrett,who he married 32 years ago and who is secretary at First Presbyterian Church; a son, David Barrett, who works in the creative advertising department of the Charlotte Observer; and a daughter, Cheryl Butler, who is works in the library at Kings Moun- tain Junior High School. The family resides at 202 Park Drive.
