The Dollar Stretcher THESE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE BARGAINS YOU'LL FIND AT THE “DOLLAR STRETCHER” NASCAR Gets Good Report A curious thing happened when Tom Ligon of Charlotte watched the Tar Heels play on television with the sound turned down and his radio tuned to the UNC Network. Tom noticed that Woody Durham could call the bucket (‘count-ic””) while the ball was still enroute, Is Woody a genius with ; : Sag a gift from blue heaven? Nope: Blame it on the age of satellites: While most i] radio broadcasts are piped to the individual stations by phone wires, televi- sion pictures have to travel a far longer path. Parked out behind the basketball arenas is a mobile satellite up-link truck. The game is literally shot into space. The truck aims at a satellite and fires a microwave beam 22,500 miles away. The TV signal then bounces off the bird and comes back to earth (a 45,000 mile journey). Because it has to go so far, there’s a slight delay involved. So when Kenny Smith shoots the three-pointer, Woody Durham can call it good at the moment it hits the net. But not until almost a second later, will the TV audience see the same. Of the 2,184 motors that NASCAR inspectors checked after each of its 29 Winston Cup races last year, only one was found illegal. I guess that means there's a whole lot of innovation under those hoods. Before Dennis Conner won back America’s Cup, he christened a large spinnaker sail ‘Dolly’ after Dolly Parton. Just so happens that Dolly Parton was singing in Australia at the time and was asked about the honor. “Well, it is America’s Cup, isn’t it?’ says Dolly. “Tell them not to throw it out, I can use it for a halter top.” 1 CARAT GEM WEIGHT HURRY WHILE SUPPLIES LAST Anh EnRC PABA ACE REDE DR ADA RD ADRDRL IJUR Available in Diamond and Genuine Ruby or Supphire YOUR CHOICE SOA ORAS ZOO oY UN RA RD RDP BRR DARD ADR The Roots of Goofy.
