Precinct Meetings Slated Kings Mountain and No.4 Township Democrats are gearing up for precinct meetings on Thursday, March 5, at 8 p.m. and are ex- pected to pass a resolution opposing a proposal by the Cleveland County Board of Elections to reduce from 28 to 17 the number of precincts in Cleveland County. East Kings Mountain Precinct will meet at the Community Center, West Kings Mountain Precinct will meet at The National Guard Armory, Bethware Precinct will meet at Bethware School and Grover Precinct will meet at Grover Rescue Squad Building. A resolution opposing the reduction in precincts has been prepared by Rob Deaton, Chairman of the Cleveland County Democratic Party, and will be circulated at the meetings Speaker of the House Liston B. Ramsey announced today the appointment of Rep. Jack Hunt as his designee to the Capital Plan- ning Commission. The for signatures. In a letter to local Democrats, Deaton noted that Republican members of the Elections Board envision consolidating several of the small precincts with larger precincts, reducing the number from 28 to approx- imately 17. “In light of this monumen- tal proposed change, the Cleveland County Democratic Party Executive Committee authorized the ap- pointment of a resolutions committee to draft a resolu- tion opposing this proposal. The Cleveland County Democratic Party opposes this proposed dissolution of precincts located in numerous communities throughout our county. We believe that political involve- ment and participation would be substantially diminished by such a drastic action; fur- Tunt Is Appointed membership on this commis- sion includes the Council of State and chaired by the Governor. Rep. Hunt, who was re- elected by the House members to a second term as Speaker Pro Tem, is from Lattimore. He, along with Representatives Edith Lutz and Charles Owens, represents the 48th House District composed of Cleveland, Rutherford and Polk Counties. Speaker Ramsey said,‘‘I am confident Representative Hunt's serv- ing on this commission will be a credit to the people of North Carolina and to the Commission.” “Common snese is in- stinct, and enough of it is genius.” Josh Billings S 214 S. The resolution states: “The Cleveland County Democratic Party Executive Committee hereby resolves the following.. “In order to serve best the citizens of Cleveland County, the number of precincts should remain the same or be increased, but not reduced. Political involvement begins in individual communities at the precinct level. “In order to encourage par- ticipation of all citizens the voting place should be as con- venient and as close as possi- ble to the voters residence. The precinct is the most fun- damental institution representing political respon- sibility and freedom. A ‘reduction in the number’ of polling places will result in voters being less involved in precinct activities and cause unnecessary distances to be traveled by citizens when they vote. “We believe that we should encourage citizens to be ac- tive in their individual com- munities through their precincts and to vote for the candidates who are best qualified to represent them. We believe that more com- munities should be involved in our political process and that it should be easier to vote, not more difficult.” Ring To Speak At Anniversary Curtis: J.
