Page 2B-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Wednesday, April 8, 1987 Todd Cloninger Assigned To Winston-Salem Outfit Kings Mountain’s Todd Cloninger, southpaw pitcher in the Chicago Cubs organiza- tion, has been assigned to Winston-Salem in the Class A Carolina League. TODD CLONINGER Cloninger, beginning his se- cond full season with the Cubs, recently completed spring training in Mesa, Ariz. The Winston-Salem team will begin its season Thursday night and will play at home on Thursday, Friday, Satur- day and Sunday. Cloninger worked a full season with the Geneva, N.Y. Class A team last year. He compiled a 4-5 record, pit- ched one shutout and had a team-leading 2.66 earned run average. Winston-Salem is con- sidered the Cubs’ high Class A club. The organization also has Class A teams in Geneva, N.Y., and Peoria, Ill. “This is a really good pro- motion for him and he’s tickl- ed to be playing in Winston- Salem,” said his father Jim Cloninger. ‘“He’ll be close enough for Kings Mountain fans to see him play.” 2148S. KMJH Patriots Win Two More, Host West McDowell Monday Kings Mountain Junior High’s baseball team won two more games during the past week to run their record to 5-0. The Patriots of Coach Tom- my Wease travel to East McDowell Thursday and return home Monday to host West McDowell. The Patriots blanked Shelby 12-0 Wednesday in a makeup game and then defeated Burns 13-3 Monday. Chad Plonk went the distance against Shelby, scat- tering five hits and fanning six. Chip Cash led the KM hit- ting with three hits and Bryan Dellinger and Chris Henson added two each. One of Dellinger’s was a triple. Chip Jones led Shelby with two hits. : Reid started and got the victory in Monday’s win over Burns. He worked 4 2/3 inn- ings and fanned six. Chad Plonk came on in the fifth and fanned all four batters he fac- ed over 1 1/3 innings. Keith Allen pitched the final inning and fanned all three men he faced. The Patriots collected 18 - hits. Cash, Reid, Plonk and Paul Brannon led the attack .. with three hits each and John Forrest, Henson, Steve Rob- bins, Daniel Honeycutt, Dell- inger and Chris Moore added one apiece. rl —— TESSIE RUFF Lady Pats Whip Burns Kings Mountain Junior High's softball team ran its record to 2-1 in the Western Association and 3-1 overall Monday at home with a 15-4 victory over Burns. Coach Candy Albergine’s ladies collected only four hits, but took advantage of eight Burns errors, the long . ball and heady base running. Velma Degree clubbed a pair of home runs to spark the KM offense.
