39,425 Acres Accepted By Cropland Program
The U.S. Department of
Agriculture has accepted
39,425 more acres of highly
erodible North Carolina
cropland into the Conserva-
~ tion Reserve Program. In
1,380
Land entered into the Con-
servation Reserve, as
directed by the Food Security
Act of 1985, will be ineligible
for farming for ten years and
must be planted with a per-
manent vegetative cover. On-
ly cropland classified as
highly erodible can be sub-
mitted for participation in the
program.
The average acceptable bid
in North Carolina was $45.73
er acre. The total cost will

addition, this year’s signup
included an option in which
farmers would receive a
‘bonus’ for each acre of corn
base they designated to go
under the program. The
bonus, to be paid in generic
commodity certificates,
amounts to $2 a bushel, based
on the Agricultural Stabiliza-

vice program payment yield
for corn. North Carolina
farmers will receive more
than $1.3 million from the
