Yep. He was caught with an emery board and sandpaper. But was he scuffing balls, or just trimming nails? Only his manicurist knows for sure. The umps never caught him in the act, they just impounded his tools of the trade. And as umpire Steve Palermo points out, ‘He can take a chain- saw out there, as long as he doesn’t use it on the baseball.” It hasn't happened yet, but it will. The Heisman sweepstakes starts about a month from now. And there are two strong quarterback candidates, both from the South—Florida’s Kerwin Bell and South Carolina’s Todd Ellis. Soon, I'll get a weekly flyer from those schools, touting their man as the Heisman hopeful. Both are highly qualified, but winning the Heisman has little to do with qualities and alot to do with exposure. That's why colleges spend big bucks on glossy pictures and stats mailed each week to the nation’s media outlets. It’s expensive but effective. And let's not forget the third ingredient for the making of a Heisman Trophy candidate—a winning team. Without victories, big stats look over- inflated. And without exposure, the voter from who-stepped-in-what newspaper won't even think twice. Let's hear it for CBS Sports who is putting together TV's first Black announcing team. James Brown and Dan Jiggetts will do NFL games together this Fall. Both men graduated from Harvard. Maybe the best high school nose-guard in the country will line-up for the A.L. Brown Wonders of Kannapolis this Fall. Pat Moore is a 6'2, 242 Ib. all-American. He benches almost twice his weight. Which will certainly make Kannapolis opponents ponder if wonders will ever cease? (See Paul Cameron at 6 pm and 11 pm on WBTV, Channel 3.) Wild Foods Workshop Set A workshop on fall wild foods will be held at Schiele Museum in Gastonia Sept. 29 from 4-7:30 p.m., Oct. 27 from 4-7:30 p.m. and Oct. 30 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Visitors will be able to iden- tify many common wild plants and weeds, gather wild plant foods, prepare and taste untamed dishes, learn the science, history and folklore of wild foods, and ex- plore the value of eating weeds in the 20th century. Any interested adult is in- vited to participate. There is a $5 fee and the workshops will be limited to 15 par- ticipants. Teachers may earn one credit toward certificate renewal while developing ex- citing new approaches to teaching sciences or social studies. Two or three to get estimates from the movers, arrange for packing cartons and make an inven- tory of what you own. Fill out change of address cards now, and transfer school and in- surance records. Gather up medical and dental records. It's smart to get rid of ex- cess belongings in a garage or tag sale. Start packing a little at a time. It's a big job. Set aside clothes for the trip tif you're relocating) and items you want to move yourself in your car. Transfer bank ac- 4 counts to your new location. Arrange to disconnect phone and power here and have them connected there. Last-minute jobs include emptying and defrosting the refrigerator, cleaning the stove, checking appliances. Area all closets empty? Win- dows closed? Load your vacuum cleaner on the van LAST, so it’s ready FIRST in your new location. The first step in successful moving is to list your house with Alexander Realty 739-1616.
