MOUNTIE PRESSURE - Kings Mountain defenders Jody Champion (78) and Wayne Brazzell (75) put the pressure on Hunter Huss quarterback Neil Cochran (10) in Saturday’s game at Hunter Huss. Huskies won 9-7 in the mud. Mounties Lose To Huss 9-7. Go To South Caldwell Friday A first half safety was the difference Saturday night as Hunter Huss scored a 9-7 non- conference victory over Kings Mountain’s Moun- taineers at the Huss stadium. The game, postponed from Friday because of last week’s heavy rains, was played on a muddy field which resulted in a rash of fumbles and missed assignments. The Huskie kicking game and defense were responsible for what turned out to be the winning points midway through the second period. The Huskies punted after a drive stalled at midfield and the punt was downed at the one yard line. Two -con- secutive mishandled snaps resulted in fumbles, and on the second Kings Mountain quarterback Ryan Hollifield was tackled in the endzone to give Huss a 2-0 lead. Kings Mountain’s free kick traveled only to midfield and the Huskies drove that one in for a score, with Pete Lipscomb scoring from five yards out with 4:50 remain- ing to make it 9-0. Kings Mountain’s offense never could get untracked in the mud, managing only one first down. It came in the first half when the Huskies were flagged five yards for being offsides. The Mountaineers, however, were still in a good position to win the game late in the fourth quarter. Monty Deaton picked up a Huss fum- ble and raced 23 yards for a score, and Todd McDaniel’s PAT from placement brought the Mountaineers to within 9-7. After that, the Moun- taineers got the ball three more times in Huss territory, but couldn’t advance it. The closest the Mounties could come to scoring was when a halfback pass from Anthony Hillman was intercepted at the five. Kings Mountain’s only scoring opportunity before the fourth quarter came following a Huss fumble at the 25. On a fourth and 10 situation, Kings Mountain at- tempted a field goal but the snap was off target and McDaniel attempted to pass for a first down. He hit Brent Bagwell but the gain carried for only six yards and shy of the first down. Kings Mountain’s offense, playing without senior fullback David Leadbetter who was nursing a back in- jury, managed only 40 yards on the ground and only eight in the second half. : The Mountaineer offense looked strong at the beginn- ing of the contest. Deaton went off right tackle for gains of two and four yards on the first two plays of the game, and on the third play, he rambled for nine yards but fumbled and Huss recovered. “For some reason, our of- fense just got in total disar- ray after that,” Coach Denny Hicks said. ‘“The defense Gridgraph KM HH First Downs 1 6 Yards Rushing 40 114 Passes 3-9-1 1-8-0 Yards Passing 20 5 Fumbles Lost 1 3 Yards Penalized 20 4 KMHS RUSHING Player Carries Yards Monty Deaton 9- 33 Ryan Hollifield 7 -14 Anthony Hillman 7 18 John Hill 2 3 KMHS PASSING Player Att.
