Page 2B-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Wednesday, October 21, 1987 Fearless Riding With Raiders By FEARLESS We're gettin’ down to the time that really counts in prep football for those teams in the state playoff running. As you can see, I'm running for “Cowboy of the Year.” I don't know why I'm all deck- ed out in cowboy finery. I just thought it might make a good picture. I'll see if I can't “fire” some more winners your way after going 9-4 last week and upping the season's average to 46 right, 17 wrong for a .730 percentage (which, by the way, is a good average, but not nearly by average last year when I picked over 80 foreons of the games correct- y). Fearless covered the Tex- tile Queen Pageant Saturday and saw some mighty good- lookin’ women. I told one of the women there, ‘“Men like me don’t grow on trees, you know." She replied: “If they did, you'd be swinging from limb to limb." _ Still another inferred I was overweight. “You're living way beyond your seams,’ she said. “You must way 200 and plenty.” I told her I was going to lose some weight and win the ‘‘no- belly’ prize. Actually, I'm right where I should be at I was really hurt when another woman told me I looked like an early- American. She said I had the face of a buffalo. Still another one continued the insult by saying that I came over on the 6-1%. “Aprilshower."’ ASHLEY CHAMPION ...Wins Singles Match PAUL CAMERON WBTYV Sports Director “That's a whole month before the ‘Mayflower,’ she said. I told another lady, ‘I kiss with my eyes shut.” “Yeah, and if you looked in- to a mirror, you'd understand why,” she said. Well, enough of this nonsense. Let's look into our prep crystal ball. South Point, holding down ~ third place in the SWC with a 3-1 record behind unbeaten Shelby and Burns (4-0), got the scare of their lives Friday at Chase before pulling out a 27-21 win in the last 14 seconds of the game. Friday, the Raiders travel to Kings Mountain. The Mountaineers are coming off another disappointing loss to R-S Central, 21-7, after hav- ing dominated Chase the week before, 17-0. I look for this game to be close. The nod goes to the Red Raiders, 21-17. East Gaston travels to West Charlotte after falling to West Meck. This one will be close, but the prediction is for a 17-14 Lion win. And here's how I see the other games: East Ruther- ford 17, Chase 16; Shelby 27, North Gaston 7; Burns 20, R-S Central 14; Bessemer Ci- ty 16, West Lincoln 6; Bunker Hill 28, Cherryville 7; Ashbrook 27, South Mecklen- burg 7; Hunter Huss 13, North Mecklenburg 8; East Mecklenburg 7, Myers Park 6; Garinger 14, Independence 13, Harding 27, Crest 13, and West Mecklenburg 18, Olym- pic 8. I hope your favorite team wins Friday. KMHS Tennis Team Loses 6-3 To Unbeaten Shelby Kings Mountain High's girls tennis team fell to Shelby 6-3 in a battle of the unbeatens in the Southwestern 3-A Conference Wednesday at the KMHS courts. The loss dropped Kings Mountain to 4-1 in the con- ference and 10-3 overall. Kings Mountain's Ashley McGinnis and J.J. Warlick were defeated for the first time in conference singles ac- tion, but the talented duo kept their unbeaten doubles record intact with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Meg Mc- CArver and Kim Williams. Kings Mountain’s other two victories came in singles competition. Sophomore Ashley Champion won the number four match 6-4, 6-4 over Chris Gafael, and Lee Ann Masters won the number six match over Karen Dody 6-2, 6-2. THE RESULTS (Singles) Pam Davis (S) def. The year, 1995 —Charlotte’s 22.500 seat Coliseum sits next to a brand new baseball-football complex off the Billy Graham Parkway. Sports entreprenuer George Shinn has just acquired the franchise rights for the P.S.R.O.N.F.L. (Post Strike. Re-Organized National Football League) to go with his Triple-A baseball team and NBA Hornets. Crazy? Nope. There's nothing crazy about Shinn building a large multi- purpose facility next to the Coliseum. He'll find a way to build a big baseball park—ten thousand seats maybe. Then, when Tampa or Phoenix get major league baseball, there'll be a Triple-A team available. Next. Shinn will con- vert his baseball park into football much like the city of Denver did back in the 60's at Mile High Stadium. For sports tans. Nirvana. For sportscasters. a reason to stay a long time. There's a simple reason for Tim Richmond's problems in racing: he's unreliable. Don't get me wrong. [ think he’s bold and daring and can save a car from trouble much like Dale Earnhardt. but Tim's break-up with the Rick Hendrick race team wasn't based on drugs or parties— Timmy just didn’t show-up and represent the sponsor like they thought he was supposed to. Big national companies like Proctor and Gamble (the parent company of Folgers) just won't stand for shenanigans from the people they pay handsomely. 1 do expect Tim to get another ride someday—nothing like long term—- he's considering a nne-race deal to drive a Ford at Rockingham tor the Raymond Be aiic-Biae Max Shops. Although Blue Max fields Pontiacs for Rusty Wallace. they've built a test T-Bird for the Atlanta race. Roger Kahn once wrote: “Football 1s violence and cold weather and sex and college rye. Horse racing is animated roulette. Boxing is smoky halls and kidneys battered until they bleed. Tennis and golf are/best plaved. not watched. Basketball, hockey and track meets are action heaped upon action. climax upon chmax, until the onlookers responses become deadened. Baseball is for the leisurely afternoons of summer and for the unchanging dreams.” paghetti Supper riday October 30, 1987 HS CAFETERIA SERVING 5:00 to 7:30 CE ey sues
