EASTRIDGE MALL (LOWER LEVEL) All Who Enter Football Contest...Read This! Every year since General Publishing Company purchased the Kings Mountain Mirror in 1973 and the Kings Mountain Herald in 1974, this paper has HAD a weekly football contest during the 10 weeks of the high school football season. We've increased the winner's purse over the years from $25 to $100 and it's caused the contest to be one of the most popular anywhere. To our knowledge, no other weekly paper, au very few dailies, pay as much as $100 in a football con- test. The contest has been good for the paper, good for area mer- chants who sponsor it, and good for the fans. We have hun- dreds of entries a week. But, it seems anytime money is on the line, there are a few people who'll try to stack the deck against the hundreds of onest people who play it straight. Our football contest is no different. There are a few people in the area who each week turn ir anywhere from a half dozen to 25 entries and put different names on all of them, change all of the toss-up games around and make it almost impossible for the honest people to have an equal chance at winning the contest. We've disqualified many people in the past because of this, but still there are a few who are slick enough to get by with cheating. It's gotten to a point where we're going to put a stop to it one way or another. We're writing this column in hopes that those who are sen- ding in so many entries will take it on their own to stop. If that doesn’t happen, we'll have no other choice but to put an end to the football contest. There are three weeks remaining in this year’s contest. We plan to use these three weeks to see if the situation gets any etter. If not, there won't be a football contest next year. We hope this is not the case. We have no gripe with a man and his wife, or even a man, wife and couple of his children sending in a contest apiece. KM Man Faces Murder Charge Timothy Keith Childers, 31, or Route 4, has been charged with first degree murder in connection with the death of a Gastonia’ man following a fight Sunday night. According to Cleveland County Coroner W.D. Simp- son, Frank Edward Moody, 76, of 1506 Overman Ave. Gastonia, died of a massive heart attack after fighting with Childers at the Lyons Trailer Park home of Childers in Bethlehem Com- munity. Simpson, who said Moody had a history of heart trouble, also sustained cuts, bruises and a puncture wound to the head. Moody was dead on the scene just before 7 p.m., according to Lt. Bob Fortenberry of the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Department who said Moody and Childers had apparently been fighting over a relative’s car and some shots were fired. Childers’ wife, Donna, also was treated at Kings Mountain Hospital and released. The incident is under in- vestigation by the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Department. Childers is being held without bond in Cleveland County Jail. Fall Revival Set At David Baptist fall revival services will begin Sunday and continue through Oct. 28 at David Bap- tist Church. Trial date is Nov. 21 in Cleveland County District Court. game, field events will be held at 1 p.m. in the stadium. The Homecoming queen nominees are Audra Barber, representing Journalism class; Candice Carswell, representing Cosmetology- VICA; Tammy Hutchins, representing Letterman’s Club; Jenny Reid, represen- ting Beta Club, and Justine Sherer, representing Human Relations Council. The Queen will be crowned at half-time ceremonies. But we intend to put a stop to those who not oniy send in con- tests in each member of their family's names, but also every neighbor on the block. One contestant who was announced as the winner of one of this year’s contests admitted that she had never sent in a foot- ball contest. The winning contest was sent in by one of her neighbors. So, that week's winner will not be paid and that $100 will be added to the kitty of the final week's football con- test, making it worth $200. On your entry blank beginning this week, you'll notice in the rules that all entry blanks must be signed in ink. That signature must appear on the bottom of the contest blank and when the winner appears to pick up his check, the signature will be matched against the signature on his driver's license or other official ID. The winner of each week's football contest will be notified by telephone as soon as possible after the contest is checked. Normally, that would be on Monday night. The winner will be told when to come to the Herald to pick up his check. No checks will be mailed unless we are absolutely certain everything is on the up and up and the winner's name will not be given out over the telephone. It can be read in each Wednesday's paper. All contest blanks will be held onto until the time the winner comes to pick up his check. If, at that time, his signatures don’t match or if there is any reason whatsoever to believe that the winner sent in more than one entry or if his entry was sent in by someone else, he will be disqualified and the money awarded to the runner-up. We hope this will make the contest what it was intended to be...a chance for our readers to have some fun and win some money. Many of our readers in the area have been playing the football contest every week for years and we appreciate it. If you have any suggestions on ways to make it more equal for everyone, please let us know. PERSONAL TOUCH 213 N. State University Engineering ELECT MORETZ: COMMISSIONER TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3RD eProfessional Engineer eVice-President-Campco 1 I, Al Moretz, am a candidate for City Commissioner for District I. I am the only candidate with technical training and experience related to the selection of a city manager. As a citizen, I am concerned about my utility bills, recrea- tion for the children, the senior citizens program, improving the streets and drainage systems, the appearance of our neighborhoods and getting information from the city. “As a commissioner, with my engineering experience and citizen input, I would work for the other citizens to improve these situations. In order to accomplish this task, all citizens must take part in government as individuals. Candidates also should be considered on their individual qualification AND NOT AS A GROUP. I offer myself as an individual with an engineering degree to the citizens of Kings Mountain. I would like to use my talents as your District I Commissioner. Thank You ’d. Pe Adv iin
