Carrie E. and Lena V. Glenn
Foundation of Gastonia,
North Carolina, has awarded
a grant of $5,000 to Belmont
Abbey College to introduce
courses in Education which
will lead to certification for
teachers of the severely and
profoundly handicapped.
Presently, federal legislation
mandates that all teachers in
severe and profound settings
have the proposed certifica-
tion. Belmont Abbey College
will be the only four year col-
lege in North Carolina to pro-
vide these state approved
courses required for the cer-
tification. Descriptions of the
three courses follows.
Course #1 - Introduction to
Individuals with Severe/Pro-
found Mental Retardation (3
credits)
The first course will pre-
sent prevalence and etiology
particular to the the
severe/profound mental
retardation, and an introduc-
tion to accompanying condi-
tions such as cerebral palsy
seizure disorders, physical
anamolies, etc. Also discuss-
ed will be relevant legisla-
tion, continuum services of
education, social, vocational,
recreation and adaptive
physical education, the im-
portance of social role
valorization (normalization),
and awareness of community
attitudes and resources, the
necessity of and methods for
working with families, and an
awareness of normal
development.
Course #2 - Curriculum and
Method of Severe/Profound
Mental Retardation.
This course provides in-
struction and experience with
tests and assessments; data
collection and utilization; in-'
structional methods, i.e. pro-
mpting sequence/fading,
behavior ‘shaping, © instrue-’
tional adaptations, etc.; °
general curriculum; voca-
tional education and place-
ment; recreation; and
behavior management.
Course #3 - Interdisiplinary
Team Management of In-
dividuals with Severe/Pro-
found Mental Retardation.
Thorough examination of
the following professions as
they cooperate to contribute
to the total development of
the severly/profoundly men-
tally retarded individual:
Physical Therapy, Occupa-
tional Therapy, Speech and
Language Therapy, Social
Work, Adaptive Physical
Education, Vocational
Rehabilitation, Classroom
