The Navy now has five black admirals. Johnson lives with his wife, Helen, on base quarters by the Cooper River. They have three children, Laura, 27, who works with IBM In Rockville, Md., Lois, 24, a re- cent graduate of UCLA, and Norman, 20, a sophomore at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. The past five months have been busy for Johnson as he has familarized himself with the operations at the sprawl- ing 20,000 acre military com- plex. Johnson has been an active community member at his previous home ports with agencies such as United Way, YMCA, and Boy Scouts. He is active in partnership pro- gram with the Charleston County School District. He was speaker at the Cowpens Day Parade in Cherokee County recently. The Charleston Naval Base provides the logistical sup- port for 76 ships including 31 cruiser destroyers and 10 nuclear powered fast attack submarines. Charleston is the Navy’s largest submarine base. It is also home to the Polaris Missile Facility, which produces the Poseidon and Trident missiles. The World's first double decked Rehearsal Dinner Honors The Kings Mountain Holi- day Inn was the scene of a rehearsal dinner honoring Melanie Parham and Clarence Virgil Thornburg, III, Friday evening. Mr.and Mrs. C. V. Thornburg. Jr., parents of the bridegroom- elect, and Mrs. Hattie Bess Harmon of Kings Mountain, grandmother of the bridegroom-elect, hosted the dinner. Suzanne Lee Shows Slides On Recent Trip To Turkey Suzanne Lee showed slides of her recent trip to Turkey as an exchange student for the program last week of the Kings Mountain AARP Chapter at the Depot Center. Also present as a special guest was Santina Oliveira, exchange student from Brazil, who is living with Dr. and Mrs. Joe Lee and family this year and attending KMSHS. Miss Lee talked about the “Foreign Exchange Pro- gram.” Members took the occasion to sing ‘happy birthday’ to Charlie Blalock, Mary Allen, Lydia Mitchell, Ray Cline and Audrey Webster and presented canned goods for Thanksgiving baskets for the needy. Members were reminded that flu shots will be given again at the Depot Center and that the fuel assistance program will be held on Nov. 10th from 1 until 4 p.m. for those eligible for assistance. Smith Completes Course Army National Guard Pvt. 1st Class Samuel J. Smith, son of Janice B. Bess and stepson of Kenneth R. Bess of 2009 Redwood Circle, Kings Mountain, N.C., has com- pleted an equipment storage specialist course at the U.S. Army Quartermaster School, Fort Lee, Va. The course provided students with a working knowledge of the federal sup- ply system, storage opera- tions and packaging pro- cedures. In addition, they received driving instruction on such materials-handling equipment as conventional and rough terrain forklifts and warehouse tractors. He is a 1986 graduate of Kings Mountain Senior High School. TO OREGON Inez Palmer and Lou Tinker have returned to Portland, Oregon, after a visit with their former neighbor, Mrs. Frances .
