Earlier this % year, he was named District Athletic Director of the Year, = and later was selected Southwestern 3-A Conference Coach of # the Year for leading his Red Raiders to a 9-3 season and se- : cond place behind state champ South Point. And now, he’s picked up the Associated Press’s State Coach of the Year, be- ing cited for turning the South Point program around after an 0-10 season a year ago. Two players from the Southwest Conference were also selected to the all-state team. They were defensive back Brian Pate of South Point and placekicker Clint Gwaltney of Shelby. Both are | being highly recruited by the major colleges. * * Chase High's Billy Haynes, a linebacker, set a Shrine Bowl record with 16 tackles for the North Carolina team in last week’s 24-13 loss to South Carolina at Charlotte’s Memorial Stadium. Quarter- back Jack Huss Jr. of R-S Central also represented the JIM BIGGERSTAFF SWC in the contest. ks Coaches from Wake Forest and N.C. Furman of the Sownern Conference is also high on the Mountaineer stan- out. : Cherryville’s Kenney Poston expects to see a lot of playing & time with N.C. State’s basketball team this winter... Kings & Mountain’s Curt Pressley closed out his college football career with Gardner-Webb recently, helping lead the Bulldogs to the SAC-8 title and a berth in the NAIA playoffs. Pressley had 26 tackles and an interception on defense this year and carried the ball 25 times for 155 yards and one TD on offense. For his career, he had 28 tackles and an interception on defense and 524 yards and seven touchdowns on offense. = Kings Mountain’s Kevin Mack had his best game of the season Sunday in Cleveland’s 38-24 victory over the Bengals. € » He rushed for 136 yards, scored two touchdowns rushing, and § ‘caught a TD*pass from Bernie Kosar. Ona Cleveland radio ‘sports show Monday night, Mack gave all the praise to his of- fensive line. Michael Dean Perry broke his brother William’s record for quarterback sacks and tackles for losses this season. His sack of quarterback Todd Ellis in the South Carolina game gave him 28 for his career and padded his own record for Clemson and the ACC, but the sack also was his 61st tackle for a loss, breaking The Fridge’s mark of 60.
