King Celebration

A birthday celebration to
salute and give special
recognition to the late Dr.
Martin Luther King will be
held at Kings Mountain Com-
munity Center Saturday at
5:30 p.m.
The public is invited to the
semi-formal dinner and to
hear Professor Forest Toms,

Dream, Yesterday, Today
and Tomorrow.” Top enter-
tainment is also slated and

adults, are encouraged to at-
tend.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,
who was born Jan. 15, 1929,
became the international
symbol of the American civil
rights movement. Along with
his intensely emotional
spiritual growth, Dr. King’s
life transformed from a 26
year old minister of a modest
lack Baptist Church in Mon-
tgomery, Alabama into one of
the most outstanding
spokesmen of the black
freedom struggle. He
dedicated his life to the strug-
gle against discrimination,
Py and violence, giving
is life to and for the move-
ment.
Joseph L. Rauch, a general
counselman of the leadership
conference on civil rights and
long time civil liberties at-
torney, acclaimed King as
the “man who sparked the
civil rights movement by
teaching blacks to hope and
whites to care.”
King received the Nobel
Peace Prize in 1964. He led
the Montgomery bus boycott
in 1955, the Birmingham and
the march on Washington in
1963; Selma and the Voting
Right Act 1965; and the poor
people’s campaign in Mem-
i 1967, where he lost his
ife.
