To UNC-C Dean’s List
Pam Morrow, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Larry Morrow
of Kings Mountain, has been
named to the dean’s list for
the Fall semester at the
University of North Carolina
at Charlotte.

The Charlotte Writers Club
and Queens College will co-
sponsor The Charlotte
Writers Conference on the
Queens campus March 4-5.
All writers interested in
workshops on writing novels,
short stories, plays, poetry,
biography and articles, or fic-
tion for young adults should
plan to attend. Workshop
leaders are:
Joy Williams, currently
teaching in the writing pro-
gram at the University of
Arizona. She has had stories
published by Esquire, The
Paris Review and The New
Yorker. Her works have fre-
quently been included in
teaching texts and an-
thologies.

the 70th celebration of dental
ublic health in the state will
e held Friday, Jan. 15th, at
10 a.m. at Raleigh’s Marriott
Hotel.
Mrs. Lynch said she pushed
for fluroide in the city’s
drinking water after she
became active on the dental
health committee and learn-
ed the importance of floride
for good dental health care.
Mrs. Lynch has served on the
board for 20 years.

Conference Set In Charlotte
is the author of ‘‘Safekeeping,
the first book-length fiction
about Vietnam to be written
by a woman. Both that book
and her second novel, ‘A
Fragile Peace,” were selec-
tions of the Literary Guild.
Poet William Matthews has
taught at a dozen colleges
and universities as well as
the Bread Loaf Writers Con-
ference. He has had eight
books of poetry published
since 1970 and has been
awarded numerous honors
and fellowships including the
Guggenheim Fellowship.
Harry Mazer writes books
for young adults. Recently
Avon published Mazer’s ex-
uberant and funny ‘‘I Love
You, Stupid,”” an ALA
Notable Book. His novels are
widely read among young
adults and have received
critical acclaim from
reviewers and educators.
Margaret Kelso, who earn-
ed her BA at Queens College,
is a playwright, teacher and
freelance writer. She
graduated from Carnegie
Mellon University Depart-
ment of Drama master’s pro-
gram in playwriting, where
she won the 1987 John Ford
Noonan Award. Most recent-
ly, she wrote the book and
some of the lyrics to the 1987
Tenth Anniversary Show of
the pittsburgh Regatta.

dowment for the Humanities
and is currently adjunct pro-
fessor of history at the Col-
