MAKE AMERICA FARMS SAFE—Dave Althaus, coor- dinator of Monsanto’s farm chemical safety programs, says that a major campaign launched by state FFA chapters will increase awareness of farm safety and the need for safe handling of farm chemicals. SAFETY CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED BY FFA—Future Farmers at KM Senior High School are joining other chapters in the state in a major effort to increase awareness of farm safety and the need for safe handling of farm chemicals. Kits, above, will be offered by the chapter through April 30th. Local FFA Chapter Participating In National Farm Safety Effort Hints For Comamakant Fine Furniture Care For most families, the in- vestment in furniture repre- sents the fourth-largest budget item. Only their home, au- tomobile and the cost of edu- cation exceed the dollars in- vested in furniture. The home and automobile may be ex- changed for new ones and the ° cost of education is rationalized in life's success. But, furni- ture is frequently purchased with the thought that it will achieve heirloom status. Given proper care, quality wood furniture can provide generations of use. Research scientists at Johnson Wax offer these care suggestions: ® Protect the finish—Fur- niture is sealed during the manufacturing process to pro- tect the wood. Proper care in- volves protection of the finish. Pledge furniture polish pro- vides a high, lustrous shine and helps protect the finish » from everyday wear, spots and spills. It complements the natural luster of the finish and enriches the wood grain. ® Avoid troublemakers— Place furniture out of direct sunlight and away from di- rect sources of heat and humidity. When dusting, use particles that could scratch and dull the finish. ® Prevent moisture dam- age—Left unattended, mois- ture from wet items can pen- etrate the finish and stain the wood beneath it. Use coasters under beverage glasses, sau- cers under cups and potted plants. If spills occur, blot up moisture as quickly as possi- ble—before it has a chance to penetrate the finish. ® Keep it clean—Cleaning ingredients in most care prod- ucts provide safe cleaning for the finish and prevent build- up by softening and remov- ing wax along with soil. Soiled cloths that may be damp with product cannot clean, so re- fold them to a clean area or exchange them for fresh ones. For a free furniture care pamphlet, send a postcard to Johnson Wax, P.O. The coupon good for 25 cents off throughout North Carolina, including Kings Mountain, have joined a major effort to increase awareness of farm safety and the need for safe handling of farm chemicals. To help reduce the potential user exposure to agr- ricultural chemicals, FFA chapters are selling two pairs of safety goggles and two pairs of gloves in kits called *2+2 Handy Packs’’ in time for spring planting. Kits, safety will be sold through April 30 by participating FFA chapters at a minimum cost to farmers. The program, sponsored by Monsanto, was developed to heighten awareness in the farm community of the im- portance of using protective equipment when handling agricultural chemicals. Through this program, both Monsanto and the FFA have renewed their commit- ment to make America’s farms a safer environment, Althaus reports. ‘The FFA organization is particularly important in this effort since it can serve as a powerful and influential voice on behalf of farm safety in the local com- munity.” The 2+2 Handy Pak Pro- gram was first introduced in 1986 on a trial basis in Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota. Based on FFA chapter response the sales resuts, the program was expanded last year to eight midwest states. For 1988, FFA chapters in 16 states are eligible to par- (0 f “The program has rewards for everybody involved,” Althaus observes. ‘FFA chapters have the opportuni- ty to participate in a major community safety project, Monsanto has a meaningful way to help promote farm chemical safety, and farmers receive important safety pro- tection equipment at a bargain. With the continued help and support of state and local FFA organizations, we look forward to an extremely successful program in 1988.” Participating FFA chapters purchase the 2+2 Handy Paks from Monsanto at cost, with all profits from the sale remaining with the local chapter. In each state, qualifying chapters also are eligible to win cash awards, ranging from $100 to $500 bas- ed on sales records.
