Junior varsity action gets underway at 4 p.m. Varsity action begins at 6:30. The boys won and the girls lost in Southwestern 3-A Con- ference action Tuesday night at Chase. The Mountaineers won their second straight conference game, 78-59 to run their overall record to 8-5, and the girls fell to the league-leaders 55-37. The KM jayvees won the afternoon contest 77-52. Brent Bagwell scored 22 Mounties Hold Off South Point 59-58 Kings Mountain’s Moun- taineers had to hang on at the end to edge South Point 59-58 Friday night at Belmont for their first Southwestern 3-A Conference victory. Larry Sipe’s five had a 59-56 lead with just seconds remaining but the Moun- taineers were whistled for a technical foul. South Point hit both free throws to cut the margin to 59-58, but couldn’t score on the inbounds play. The victory gives the Mountaineers a 1-3 con- ference record and 7-5 overall mark. Tim Goode and Bryan Jones led the KM scoring with 14 points apiece and Cliff points and grabbed 13 re- bounds to lead the Moun- taineers over the winless Tro- jans. Patrick Jones added 21 points for KM and Albert Ware had 18 points and eight rebounds for Chase. The Mountaineers took command from the opening tipoff and were never headed. Larry Sipe’s charges held a 20-9 lead after the first quarter, a 44-19 advantage at intermission and a 55-35 lead going into the fourth quarter. H¥k The unbeaten Chase girls built up a 34-12 halftime lead over the KM ladies and led 49-20 going into the fourth quarter. Tara Miller led the Meeks added 12. Brent Bagwell had 11 points and 14 rebounds. Beljai Baklai scored 20 points and Demond Alex- ander added 14 points and nine rebounds for the Red Raiders, who dropped to 1-3 in the conference. Kings Mountain held the upper hand most of the way but never could break the game open. The Moun- taineers led 14-11 after the first period, 30-29 at intermis- sion and 46-42 going into the final eight minutes. Hkk South Point’s girls posted their first conference win in Chase attack with 22 points and Leslie Camp added 12. Adrienne Woods led KM with 10 points. kkk Kings Mountain’s jayvees jumped to a 19-2 first quarter lead and never let up in winn- ing their ninth game in 11 starts. Ronnie Funderburke’s team led 41-16 at intermission and 59-34 going into the fourth quarter. Ryan Hollifield led the KM scoring with 21 points and Alan Williams added 16. After Friday’s meeting with East, the Mountaineers will entertain Burns next Tuesday, and then play R-S Central and North Gaston at-- the opener, 51-40, as Michelle Williamson scored 25 points and Trish Lewandowski 16. South Point led 21-17 at the half and 38-27 going into the fourth quarter. Melissa Helms scored 14 points and Carmen Smith eight for the KM ladies, who fell to 2-2 in the conference and 3-9 overall. Hk Kings Mountain’s jayvees continued their torrid scoring pace in an afternoon contest, winning 92-61. It was the third time this season Ronnie Funderburke’s lads have top- ped the 90-point figure.
