Sew Cheerers Are 18th In Nation KMSHS varsity cheerleaders ranked 18th in the recent International Cheerleading Open Cham- pionship in Nashville, Ten- nessee among 3500 junior and senior high school students performing in the national competition. The local squad was the on- ly co-ed squad to perform and was among three schools in North Carolina. East Gaston and Apex performed on the second day of the competi- tion. Over 7,000 people par- ticipated, including the crowds that cheered the cheerleaders in the largest national cheerleading event in the nation. The local squad performed in the preliminary competition and in the finals in Nashville Municipal Auditorium-Coliseum. The 1987-88 Squad ranked in the top 18 Co-ed squads in the na- tion, including British Colum- bia and Canada. Each squad member received a special IOCC champion patch, gold pin and ribbon after perform- ing a four minute cheerleader-dance routine. Randy Neil, President of International Cheerleading Foundation, who wrote the definition of cheerleading in World Book Encyclopedia, addressed the group and local students toured the historical downtown district, visited the War Memorial Plaza, Tennessee State Museum, State Capitol Building, Country Music Ci- ty, Wax Museum, Collector’s Jukebox Mueum, Collector’s Car Museum, Barbara Man- drel Fan Club Station, Con- way Twitty City Mall, Vanderbilt College District and sites of the Parthonon, exact replica of the ancient building in Greece during a four day stay in Nashville, Tenn. Coaches Kevin Plonk and Suzanne Goforth accom- panied the local Squad. Varsity cheerleaders gave a pep rally for Central School students Wednesday and are in process of preparing for the NCSCC cheerleading competitions on March 26 at Methodist College in Fayet- teville. Members of the Kings Mountain Squad are Mary Ferebee, captain; Angela Redmond, co-captain; Heather Bradshaw, Sciandra Robinson, Deana Gillespie, Candace Carswell, Jimmy Ferebee, William Ledbetter, Gayla Jones, Lisa Lund and Shannon Smith.
