Page 2A-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Wednesday, March 23, 1988 Howell Stroup Running For Gaston County Commissioner Howell Stroup is a can- didate of the Democratic Party for the Gaston County Commissioner from the Cher- ryville Township in the primary election on Tuesday, May 3, 1988. He is married to Elizabeth Starnes and has four children. Howell Stroup is a graduate of Cherryville High School where he was a member of the original Ironman Foot- ball team. He is a graduate of N.C. State University. At State, he played football and was a co-captain of the 1941 team an the recepient of the Alumni Athletic Award for outstanding student Athlete. During World War II, he served as a pilot and an in- structor and is now a major in the Reserve Officer Association. Mr. Stroup is the owner and operator of Cher- ryville Tree Nursery an has been in the landscaping business for 40 years. He is a past president fo the North Carolina Nursurymen’s Association. Mr. Stroup serv- ed on both the Cherryville Ci- ty School Board and the Gaston County School Board. He served as a scoutmaser for 35 years and earned the Woodbadge Award and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award for outstanding leadership in the Piedmont Boy Scout Council. Mr. Stroup is a member of the First Baptist Church; a member of the American Legion and the Cherryville Rotary Club; a member of the Gaston Historical Society and president of the Cher- ryville Historical Society. He was a precinct chairman for the Democraticparty for 25 years. He is also a member and the leader of the Cher- ryville New Year Shooters. The Stroup’s children are: Hank-is a N.C. State University graduate from the school of Nuclear Engineer- ing living in Raleigh. Dan-a graduate of Wake Forest University and Bowman Gray School of Medicine is a doctor in Hayesville, N.C. Matthew-is a graduate of Mars Hill College and living and in employed in Cher- ryville at Carolina Freight. ‘Margaret Ann-a graduate of East Tennesse State University and received her master’s degree from the University of Tennessee. She is employed by Pitney-Bowes and lives in New Jersey.
