TEEN HEALTH FAIR-Plans are underway for a Teen Health Fair on Tuesday, April 12, at Kings Mountain Junior High. The fair is sponsored by the Health Department and Children who will be five years old on or before Oc- tober 16, 1988 should register for kindergarten in their respective school districts. If parents do not know which school their child will attend, they should call the Kings Mountain District Office at 739-4589. Applications and Kindergarten Health Asses- ment Forms are available at all elementary schools. The application should be com- pleted and returned to the school as soon as possible. Wells Wins KM Sanford Award Betsy Wells, English and drama teacher at Kings Mountain High School, is win- ner of the Terry Sanford Award for creativity from the Kings Mountain Association of Educators. A local Terry Sanford Award selection committee viewed scrapbooks of actual lesson plans and student writing on a theme, “Teaching Writing Skills Throughout the Curriculum’. Entries were judged on creative techniques for en- couraging student growth in the area of written self ex- pression across a variety of content areas. Married to Grover teacher Steve Wells, Mrs. Wells began her teaching career in Kings Mountain in 1970 and taught reading with Mrs. Anne Bryant at Central School. After four years there, she moved to eighth grade English when the new juniorhigh was built and team-taught with Donna Russ, Barbara Lovelace and Ken Napier. During her five years at KMJH, she was elected Kings Mountain Teacher of the Year. In 1979-80 she moved to KMHS and has taught English and drama since. Mrs. Wells is the daughter of Lester and Blannie Hart of Lansing in Ashe County. She graduated from Northwest Ashe High School and earned her B.A. and M.A. degrees from Appalachian State University. The Wellses are parents of Kellene, 23, a graduate of ASU and Assistant Director of Aging in Kings Mountain; Hart, 10, and Brett, 8, both students at Grover School. They reside in the Dixon Community and are active in Trinity Episcopal Church. Scholarship Honors KM Native A perpetual scholarship named for Alamance County “mother of the arts’’, Sarah Hambright Rhyne, Kings Mountain native, was an- nounced last week at the Beaux Arts Ball, the annual fund raiser held by the Alamance County Arts Coun- cil at Alamance Country Club. Mrs. Rhyne is sister of Mrs. Lawrence Patrick of Kings Mountain. She has been active in the life of the city of Graham and became its first lady while her husband, Myron, served as mayor for more than two decades. She spearheaded theplacing of planters on Graham streets and planting of the flowery pear trees around the court square. A native of Kings Moun- tain, she has been a resident of Alamance County since not long after World War II when she and her husband moved there from Kings Mountain. Though their only child, Janet, was born after they moved to Graham in 1947, Mrs. Rhyne soon activated her interested in the arts of her adopted county. The Sarah H. Rhyne Scholarship fund will provide $250 for a high school senior who wants to further his education in the arts. It was intially designed to be used for education at a trade school such as Alamance Community College.
