STUDY PROJECT - Students in John Pettus’ fourth period social studies class at Central
School display their independent study project book which earned them an A. Students were
asked to research n African country by finding and using 20 sources, taking notes, and writing

Spring
Spring is here and the
Historical Museum of
Shelbyis gearing up for the
annual Cleveland County Spr-
ing Fest on May 7. Rain date
is the following week.
Included will be student
and adult art. and
photography with increased
cash prizes for adults of up to
$75 for first place, $50 for se-
cond, $25 for third and four
honorable mentions of $15
each. There will also be
changes in the entertain-
ment. “The Golden Circle”
will be added on the west side

students from Gardner-Webb
College will spend several
weeks this spring studying
the unique geological and
ecological features of the
Southwestern U.S. The two
short field courses will be
held May 13-30.
Drs. Tom Jones and Les
Brown of the college’s
Department of Natural
Sciences will teach the
Southwestern Geology and
Southwestern Ecology
courses. Areas of studey will
be New Mexico, Western
Texa, Arizona, Southern
California, Utah, and
Nevada.
Students taking the courses
will complete a research
paper before or after the trip

sion. Each course offers four
hours of credit.
The students will visit 20
national parks and all four of
the major North American
deserts. Students will keep a
daily journal of the areas
visited, the geologic features
and processes and flora and
fauna seen, and the survival
adaptations noted.
In addition to their scien-
tific emphases, Dr. Brown
says that these courses will
offer students valuable exer-
cises in improving interper-
sonal relationships. “We'll be
spending a great deal of time
together and camping out
much of the way across the
country, with an occasional
night at a motel to wash up.”
Only one of the fifteen
students signed up for the trip
is a sciene major, says
Brown. The other fourteen
are students who elected to
take these courses in order to
meet the college’s science re-
quirements.

Fest Set May 7 In Shelby

organizations, booster clubs,
and others. Also, the winner
of the county wide Student
Essay Contest will be an-
nounced.
New this year will be the
first annual Cleveland Coun-
ty Checker Playin’ contest. It
will be open to anyone from
Cleveland County, young or
old, man or woman, with an
entry fee of $2.50 and the win-
ner will not only receive a
cash prize but their name will
be inscribed on a special
trophy to be displayed. A
challenge will be issued to
other so-called champions in
North and South Carolina for
a playoff on July 4.
The museum is looking for
volunteers to help set up the
art work and entertainment
areas. Also, they are seeking
entertainers, dance, vocal,
and music groups. Questions

tals, or any other activity
