Love takes on politics when the
controversial romance between King
Edward VIII of England and American
divorcee Wallis Simpson is retold in
The Woman He Loved, Sunday, April
3, on CBS.
Jane Seymour and Anthony Andrews
star as the fated couple whose love for
each other caused a national turmoil
and his eventual abdication of the
throne in 1936.
“The English see her as a conniving
little witch who turned Edward’s head.
The Americans tend to see Edward and
Wallis as a case of true love destroyed
by politics and the press,” said director
Charles Jarrott.
“We're trying to tell the story from the
American point of view for the first
time,” said Larry Thompson, the
two-hour movie’s executive producer.
“Qur film tells the story from Wallis’
perspective. Whether it’s all that
sympathetic toward her, people will
have to judge for themselves.”
Seymour is sympathetic toward the
character she plays, but she still senses
a streak of manipulativeness in Wallis.
“I think she genuinely found him
attractive, but she also saw that there
were advantages in encouraging his
feelings for her,” she said. “Wallis
definitely wanted to be Queen. It’s
evident that she tried to break off with
him when it looked like he was going to
give up the throne. Still, after all was
said and done, she stayed with him for
35 years.”
Being acquainted with royalty in real
life, Andrews said he was a bit uneasy
about playing the part of the controver-
sial monarch. But the conflict the
character provided was too good of an
opportunity to decline.
“It’s not just the Queen, it’s the entire
family. They’re all doing much more
work than ever before,” the British
actor said. “The royal family is looked
up to for a standard of behavior. They

have no real political power, so they
instead take on a sort of moral
standard. That’s the real point of this -
story, I think. Edward VIII disappoint-
ed an entire nation, who looked to him
to be better than they were.”
Both Seymour and Andrews agreed
that Edward was so totally absorbed by
Wallis because she was so vastly
different from any woman he had met
in his sheltered existence among
royalty. She treated him like a human
being rather than an object upon a
pedestal, and made him feel truly
important.
A touching tale surfaced when Sey-
mour was researching her role.
“Those who were close to them in
their later years say that in private, he
always called her ‘your royal highness.’
I think that was very sweet,” she
said.
Seymour had her first major film role
in the James Bond adventure Live and
Let Die. She will be featured in the
upcoming miniseries Onassis and War
and Remembrance.
Andrews, seen recently in CBS’
Bluegrass, is perhaps best known for
his role as Sebastian Flyte in the British
series Brideshead Revisited.
