Page 2A-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Wednesday, April 20, 1988 BRIDGET BARRETT Bridget’s Prize-Winning Butterfly Is A ‘Cuty’ Bridget Barrett, Bethware School first grader and daughter of Steve and Freda Barrett, colored a butterfly in a recent city-wide contest and named it CUTY, clean up that yard, to win the grand prize. In a continued effort to clean up Kings Mountain, the “We Care” Cleanup program was introduced to the Kindergarten, First and Se- cond grade students in the Kings Mountain District Schools on March 15 by Coor- dinator Cathy Clark of the Ci- ty of Kings Mountain. Ms. Clark visited each of the classes and presented a cleanup program to students. This program was to show each child how they have an important part in helping keep the city clean just by do- ing things around their homes, schools, etc. The City has chosen a but- terfly as their logo that will be painted on the new street sweeping machine the city board of commissioners just recently voted to purchase. A replica drawing of the but- terfly was handed out to the students so they could have an opportunity to get directly involved, said Ms. Clark. The students were asked to color the butterfly and then give it a special name. The prin- cipals of each school picked one winner and four names were turned into Supt.Robert McRae’s office so he could pick a grand winner. The name CUTY will be painted on the new street sweeping machine along with Bridget’s name and Bethware School, where she is a first grader in Mrs. Nan- cy Hughes’ class. Upon arrival of the street sweeper, a demonstration will be presented to each school, said Ms. Clark. Each student will find out how it works and the safety precau- tions they need to take when they see it on the streets. The students will also have the op- portunity to see Bridget’s winning butterfly entry. At’ this time, Ms. Clark will pre- sent a “We Care about Our City” button to each student. Said Ms. Clark, ‘The City of Kings Mountain would like to thank Kings Mountain School System for allowing the students and young citizens of Kings Mountain the oppor- tunity to take part in helping to clean our city up and remember as Bridget would say CUTY,clean up that yard.” Hazardous Materials Awareness Safety Program Scheduled the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) through its Emergency Education NET- work (EENET) will present a 16-hour hazardous materials awareness iden- tification and basic safety program on Tuesday, April 26, and Wednesday, April 27. One common cause is heavy lifting, using the stomach muscles instead of the stronger muscles of arms, shoulders and legs. When lifting heavy objects, feet should be spread about 18’ apart to give solid footing, and bending should be done by the knees, not the waist. This lessens back strain. Don’t overstress your strength - a helping hand is usually close by. ii FUEL OIL eFuel Oil eKerosene 139-3661 512 E.
