I won’t get scratched by those darn(that’s not the word he us- ed) holly bushes when I walk on the streets. And I don’t have to worry about my car getting scratch- ed when I park it there too, and I can even drive along the streets and see what the merchants have in their windows.” You would have thought he had just won a lot- tery. The response did not stop there. A downtown businessman brought an unsigned message to the office, praising the mayor’s action. ‘Can we quote you on that,” we asked. ‘‘Are you crazy, my aunt is one of the ladies who planted these trees.” Another caller took issue with the holly trees. ‘I know the mayor likes things trimmed neatly and they look nice. but I sure would like to have a tree you could squeeze. You know, soft leaves,” she ex- plained. ‘‘You know, like that old commercial,‘'Don’t squeeze the Charmin. You can’t squeeze the holly trees.” Another message was stuck under our editor’s door this morning. Dear Mayor: “I would like to thank you for giving our trees a ‘past due hair cut. Before they had the shape of a banana, now they are round and shapely. However, December is the correct timing for trim- ming. With a few showers from the heavens I feel sure our trees will continue to grow and need trim- ming again in years to come. Signed, Grateful P.S. When can some parking lines be painted downtown? : Kyle, just make sure you paint them the right color. It’s tough being a mayor. It took them 20 minutes of pounding, yellings, and caterwauling to get someone to let them out.” But that didn’t stop her, either, Mack said sadly. “A couple of days later she grabbed another ball, headed for the privy again, and we followed her, just out of sight. As she shut the privy door and we rushed up to lock it, the door flew open again and there she stood, ball in one hand, full A Beginning From Page 1-A ‘a long overdue overhaul, We are hopeful our city fathers have set the course to correct these problems. The Kings Mountain Herald will be reporting their ac- tions. One thing we applaude at this point is that our city government has made the pro- blem public. There has been no skirting the issue, or coverup of the facts. And, we en- courage further discussion. We encourage ci- ty hall to personally take the message to every corner of the public....to civic and com- munity clubs, church groups, etc..to explain the situation. People won't approve what they don’t understand, and we are confident that the people of our community will lend their vigor and support our city officials on this problem when they have been made aware of all the facts. That progress is underway, and we slop jar in the other, and the cat at her feet, hiss ing. We tried to dodge, but she drenched us, drop- ped the ball down the privy, and then she and that durned cat, both grinning, walked past us to the house.” ‘‘So you stopped playing ball in the road?” we asked. : He looked a little embarrassed. Or a lot. “No,” he admitted. “We just turned the bases around and hit the ball the other way, down the ‘street instead of up it. That way we hit the ball away from the cabbages, rutabagas, woman, cat, slop jar, and privy.” We Songroiisied him on his good judgment. “But why?’ we asked. “Why didn’t you do that in the first place?” . He shrugged. : ‘‘Made too much sense,” he said. I saw no reason to argue with that. HOMEMAKERS, EDUCATORS World Book needs full or part-time homemakers or educators. No ex- perience necessary.
